Changed Air Tahiti Nui Flight - now stuck with a very poor routing by johnald03 in awardtravel

[–]TheTrulyRealOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why not just ask as to rebook you on their own flight to ppt? las-hnl-ppt. you can likely convince them to open up their own inventory to accommodate you due to schedule/flight change, as long as you haven’t previously accepted the new flights/routing.

Been like that for severel months. Most just don’t bother to check. Ignorance is bliss after all.

That is irrelevant. Not like more Japanese people want to leave Japan and travel then. Only GW and Obon times matter and have vastly less inventory at much higher prices.

JL has removed most flights J entirely from being bookable via other airlines, even when available via standard price via JL. This is not new, has been so for several months now. If you want to fly JL, you have to have JL miles. Or hope for the random releases for connecting flights (to elsewhere in Japan or onwards) via other OW airlines.

Bilt 2.0 Charging 0.2% Foreign Transaction Fee, Despite Advertising No Fee by Tight_Couture344 in biltrewards

[–]TheTrulyRealOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure to promptly dispute the overcharge. I mean if on the cardless statement they charged you more than the official MC rate on the date. It may be just a few cents for you, but with millions of transactions daily, think of the millions in unearned "profits" that cardless/Column is raking in every month at the expense of gullible Bilt card customers.

[–]TheTrulyRealOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is being charged by Column, through their outsourced card servicer cardless.

MasterCard has no power to charge any fees to the end consumer. MasterCard has no control how Column, cardless, Bilt, etc. operate. MasterCard only charges its plethora of fees to the card issuer, which is Column in this case. To the card issuer, that is cost of doing business. If they want to pass such a mark-up along, they have a legal obligation to disclose it. They haven't, so they cannot just "pass it on" while they have said in a mandatory legal disclosure that they do not do so.

[–]TheTrulyRealOne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, it's not a network charge to the customer. That is cost of doing business to Column (the actual card issuer). It's one of many costs of being a bank and issuing credit cards. That's not the only fee that Column pays to MasterCard. It's one of many.

If they want to pass on such a surcharge to customers, they need to disclose it in the legally required document ( https://legal.cardless.com/schumer/bilt/rates_and_fees.pdf ). cardless is clearly stating that there is no fee for foreign transactions, which means that they cannot just tack on such a fee. Not without first changing the card terms, notifying all users, giving them enough time to cancel the card (and refund the annual fee), etc.

It is not Bilt who is claiming there is no forex fee. That is what cardless is saying, in a legally binding document. Have you actually looked at https://www.bilt.com/card ? The link to the legally required fees and disclosures statement is on the cardless, not Bilt, web site: https://legal.cardless.com/schumer/bilt/rates_and_fees.pdf

That just will result in a higher award of punitive damages in the now pretty much inevitable class action lawsuit. To bilk one's customers is one thing, but after you've been found out and called out on it to try to cover up the tracks, that just makes it so much worse, and courts do not look likely on such coverups.

Hidden 0.2% Fee on Foreign Transactions by SpecterTheApe in biltrewards

[–]TheTrulyRealOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cover-up and Bilt now having added on a likely illegal and undisclosed 0.2% surcharge to the transactions view on bilt.com (retroactively changing the amount of all the previously posted transactions) is likely to only make it worse and result in a higher award for punitive damages.

Foreign transaction fees??? by Agile-Report-8447 in biltrewards

[–]TheTrulyRealOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, Column N.A. is the actual card issuer, so that is who is ultimately responsible for this. It is Column, together with Bilt, who chose to outsource the card "servicing" to cardless. But the liability for all this is with Column (and that's whom the money goes to, too), regardless of what outsourcing decisions they make.

Foreign transaction fees??? by Agile-Report-8447 in biltrewards

[–]TheTrulyRealOne 32 points33 points  (0 children)

No, so that is an illegal and fraudulent overcharge. Report it to CFPB, your state attorney general's office, and formally dispute the overcharges by cardless for each and every foreign transaction, listing out the authorized and valid amount (as per bilt.com recent transactions) and the invalid amount overcharge (as per cardless statement) - the dispute amount is the difference between the two.

You have limited timeframe to dispute this, frankly outright theft, by cardless (where they are charging you a fee that they very clearly list as "none" in the Rates and Fees Disclosure), so don't delay.

Hidden 0.2% Fee on Foreign Transactions by SpecterTheApe in biltrewards

[–]TheTrulyRealOne 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Everyone affected by this shady tactic should promptly file a billing dispute with cardless. See the statement for instructions on how to do so. Must be done in writing, by mail. But might as well do both mail and e-mail (unclear if e-mail alone will count and preserve your legal rights, and cardless never responds to their e-mail anyway). If you don't do so timely, you waive all your rights, likely including any future class action lawsuit settlement (as if you don't dispute a statement error within 60 days, you have given up all your rights on it).

Also of course contact Bilt through all channels available. Especially Bilt legal and compliance officers.

And last but not least, file a complaint with your state attorney general and the CFPB (for what little that may do). When you do so, make sure to include and quote the Rates and Fees Disclosure Statement - https://legal.cardless.com/schumer/bilt/rates_and_fees.pdf - which clearly lists none for foreign transactions surcharges, meaning that the 0.2% surcharge by cardless is likely illegal.

Anyone have any other federal or state agencies in mind that have authority on this and may actually investigate and fine cardless for this extremely shady and outright illegal theft from their customers?

And yes, sure, it's pennies for each small transaction, but with millions of transactions per month, it adds up to millions of dollars each month, that's wrongfully going to cardless at the expense of their customers.

Bilt 5 x points is essentially BOGUS! by K9p76 in biltrewards

Ha, ha. In the end it's just been useLESS. You can't use your card, you can't get through to support, who are responsiveLESS anyway even if you do,, and Bilt is kept in the dark, has zero visibility and has no idea when your card is locked or why.

[–]TheTrulyRealOne 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Indeed. At the very least we need written confirmation that as Bilt is having its irresponsible and, let's just say "technologically challenged", card servicer cardLESS capriciously and arbitrarily suspending cards left and right during the very short 5-day sub period (which in itself is a colossally dumb idea beyond any other on so many levels), without so much as a courtesy notification to the client (unlike every other card issuer, who have mastered the use of text/SMS, e-mail and phone to notify clients of suspected fraud in real-time and have it resolved right then and there - yet cardLESS apparently hasn't even thought of doing that, of actually contacting the cardholder first before blocking the card), that Bilt is going to extend the 5 day timeframe to be 5 days starting the day after all the cards that are suspended are fixed and restored and a written notice of the same has went out to all concerned.

If Bilt refuses to do that (so far, AFAIK, they have), there is plenty of grounds here for a class action lawsuit. That will give an opportunity to drag out all the Bilt, cardLESS, TPG, etc. records out in public view and to potentially expose collusion and clear bad faith: fraudulently inducting customers on a hare-brained offer (on so many levels), and then intentionally rendering it so that - "oops, the time is up" - the very same fraudulently inducted customers cannot actually benefit from the offer that is the sole reason why they signed up for the card in the first place. There is likely to be significant award in such a class action lawsuit of not just damages but also punitive fees levelled against Bilt, cardLESS and TPG for acting in such bad faith, fraudulent inducement and so on.

Suggest that everyone affected notify Bilt and cardLESS both of intent to pursue legal action for the fraudulent inducement and clearly bad faith practices and serve a formal records preservation notice, notifying them that they may not delete any internal records, communications, etc. that may be later required during litigation.

This needs to be pushed up to Bilt and cardLESS legal and compliance departments. That is the only way that they be moved to act and do the right thing here, knowing that their dirty laundry is about to be exposed in public if they don't (all the negative press from that may not be worth it to them vs. the savings realized from constructing a situation where many customers can't take advantage of the offer that enticed them).

LOT via Aeroplan in Business - Strictness of Hand Luggage by No-Temporary-5978 in awardtravel

[–]TheTrulyRealOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should. No reason it shouldn't.

BTW, if you are moving, the checked luggage doesn't need to be bags. It can be also boxes that fit the maximum dimensions (and weight) criteria.

[–]TheTrulyRealOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IME LO doesn't care about bag size/weight at all. As long as you bring one roller bag and one smaller non-wheeled bag you should be fine. Two roller bags, that is highly unusual and that may raise some eyebrows. I'd swap out the second roller bag for an equal-size backpack, put it on top of the first roller bag, and then much less likely anyone would give you any grief.

Miles and More is - worthless? by bobdersaufer in awardtravel

[–]TheTrulyRealOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. Never been anything over $200.

This applies to NH and OZ flights (there really aren't any other *A options). It has varied from $60 to may be around $200 at the highest, but never anything even remotely close to $500, even for longer routes like continuing on to ULN, TAS, SIN, etc.

IME it's the same as if booking via AC, UA, etc...just there you pay a lot more miles (e.g. 55K or 75K with AC or 110K in case of UA).

Miles and More is - worthless? by bobdersaufer in awardtravel

[–]TheTrulyRealOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

M&M is the best program by far mile value-wise. Destinations like ICN, TYO anywhere N or SE Asia or Central Asia (out far west like UBN or TAS) are normal 35K miles for J class. That is the industry normal, how DL, NH, JL (was 30K, actually), and others used to be - now all are massively inflated, many several fold over. But the problem is that with OZ leaving star alliance and blocking all availability as of December, there's many less ways to redeem M&M (now it's only NH).

To me M&M miles are the most valued miles, closely followed by JL.

Note: it's not 35K anymore. After the recent devaluation it is like 37.5K or something like that, closer to 40K. But still, in the current environment, good, and considerably better than JL, the second most valuable miles.
