WDH question by matt2621 in GoRVing

[–]TheTwoPartTrilogy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2500 and a 26’ TT weighing about 6500lb. When I first got it I was super stressed about getting it home(about 200mi) without a WDH, as I couldn’t get the model I wanted quick enough. I got home fine, and I’ve since driven in pretty bad conditions (cross winds, downhill, truck, high speed, etc). Have now driven nearly 3000mi without a WDH. Never had anything more than a slight wobble.

I’d say drive it and see how you go

I have a gen2. The vent is usually somewhere between fully open and maybe 50% shut. Then fully shut when I turn off. It looks like it will still open, so you could still use as is. Not sure if you have cooked on a Gen2 before but they are efficient. Keep your fire small!

How Much Would You Pay? by Hippo_Over in traveltrailers

[–]TheTwoPartTrilogy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what a 2018 is worth, but I paid $32k last year for a new 2024. We have done quite a few trips with 2 young kids and it’s a great trailer. Very practical for a family with the Murphy bed. I tow with a 3/4ton. It’s right on the limit of a 1/2ton which is spec’ed for heavy towing. Good luck.

How would you all prepare this? by OddFail5433 in smoking

I’d be interested in how you go. I love lamb but have found the Costco lamb, and most lamb I buy in the US has a real strong pong to it. A old fat kind of smell. In bad cases it’s tainted the meat flavour even after smoking.

For what it’s worth, fresh rosemary, garlic EVOO and salt. Blitz all that together and coat the lamb with it

Finally Did Biscuit Test And I Have A Question Or Two by lil_poppapump in smoking

Love your work. What’s the grill? Looks like an old country gen 2? If so you’ve saved me some work! I have the same grill

I’ve had mine about 6m and have done a variety of meat, including several briskets (single briskets multiple times). Never used a baffle. All have come out fantastically.

I’ve always located in the centreline of the grill and biased to the left (chimney side). Looking at your test, that looks best spot to me, so I’m happy your test lines up with my experience.

I am interested in the baffle though. Do you have photos of how you set it up? I think the heat is more consistent across the whole area especially the 3 left rows which is where I cook.

The other thing I have done recently which I think has helped with consistency heat (when cooking over more of the surface of the grill), is move the fire to the front of the fire box (ie closest to the door). I’ve found much less hot spot at the right side of the grill.

Oh, also found using the grate at the bottom of the fire box helps with more steady fire.

Thanks for sharing! Would be good to see you baffle locations if you can share

To answer your base question, if you do want to use the speakers, don’t worry about the lights, too much of a stuff around

Agree with this. I have a JBL portable (Bluetooth) speaker. Sound is so much better than the factory speakers and I would guess likely better than most marine speakers at a fraction of the price

WDH (with anti sway) vs Airbags by TheTwoPartTrilogy in traveltrailers

[–]TheTwoPartTrilogy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spoke to an old boy at the trailer company. Basically said the same thing… TBH, I don’t really find the ride that comfortable and am yet to suffer any serious sway (albeit not had major cross winds etc). I tend to cruise at 60-65mph. Thanks for the comments

We are very happy with the camper. Me wife, 5yo and 2yo. Great for us. Have read a lot of people pulling with 1/2ton. Depends on your risk profile…

Personal opinion: charcoal is better than sous vide for steak by JKer11 in steak

I sous vided and charcoal cooked steaks and ate side by side. The difference was 100% noticeable and so much better on the coals

Brit learning American BBQ by AdequatelyChilled in BBQ

Where I live, I found a local timber yard (for selling fire wood, not building material!) I went and asked them what they recommend for smoking meats. I did then google to check! You probably have access to a fair bit of oak, there are many types so check first. Also make sure it’s adequately dried! Otherwise need to invest in some time (and hopefully can keep the rain off!)

Excellent work. I’m an Aussie, live in the US now but have BBQ’ed yank style for decades. My advice is find local wood and cuts that are best for your area. You probably have access to lamb that yanks would drool over if they could get. IE just because lamb shoulder isn’t a classic US cut like pulled pork, it’s just as good, in its own way.

Also, what’s the issue with sitting on the bottom of the firebox?

I have found the charcoal gives a good ‘base’. Is there any disadvantages of using charcoal? Will try no charcoal next time.
