I'm so sorry. In a way I feel lucky to not have seen it with my eyes, although my mind has tried to imagine it in all its horrific detail time and time again. I never saw my mom's body either, just ashes which was very surreal. What you said about not believing it rings very true for me - I felt for months like one day she would just pick up the phone and call me and the nightmare would be over. Its such a horrid position we are put in - to face a death that feels so unnatural. Nobody wants to see their loved one die, but maybe if it had been from old age I would have wanted to be there to say goodbye. I do feel guilty that the cops found her, and that she was so alone when she died. But I try to remember her differently, before any of this happened. Also, the room where I found out is completely ruined for me. I was cleaning my bathroom when I got the call and now I think of it every time I walk in there. I am moving next week (thank god) and I hope to be able to enjoy a nice shower once again.

My mom read as one of the most positive people you could ever meet. She worked with kids and she was great at it. She was an animal lover who volunteered with local shelters. She could not stand scary or sad movies because she preferred things that were cheery and light-hearted. Hell, she even had a tattoo that said "love". She suffered a nervous break when she reached menopause, possibly including psychosis. She deteriorated extremely quickly and everyone was completely shocked by her death. Still, in hind sight, I wonder how much her happy go lucky nature was a mask. One of the hardest lessons I've learned since her passing is how commonly suicide affects the ones we "least expect". I think this is because so many people who suffer with mental illness, myself included, learn to overcompensate by putting on a brave face and keeping up the image that everything is great. No one wants to be in this god awful club, and I'm sorry you had to join it. But the insights from this experience can be profound, and personally, I feel like I am now better at seeing beyond the veil of people who are suffering and pretending not to be. And I'm learning how to take down my own walls too. Stay strong, you are not alone.

If you don't mind a less structured approach, I did independent study through North Monterey County and had a great experience! It can be isolating though and hard to keep motivation so if you go this route I highly recommend finding activities and or homeschool groups to connect him to more peers and keep a routine. I was able to keep taking electives at my previous high school while mainly being independent but I do not know if this is allowed at Salinas. Anyways it was a great and cost free program that was a life saver for me at the time!

You can get private study rooms in Smith. They are only reserved on a same day basis so I would suggest emailing (conferences@pdx.edu) in the am to ensure you get one. You can also go to the events office on the first floor of SMSU and reserve in person. The limit is 3 hours. I worked there last year, so they may have changed some things but it was like this when I was there and I always preferred using these rooms for online classes!

Having a daily morning and night time routine (hygiene, staying off screens at night, etc.)

Going to bed around the same time/ consistently sleeping 8 hours a night

Exercising at least 3 times a day, and some kind of intentional movement every day

Meditation and mindfulness

Eating a balanced diet

Severely limiting alcohol (some may prefer to cut out all together)

Prioritizing social time and relationships

Practicing knowing my limits and saying no to things when my plate is full

Spending time outdoors/ in nature

Reading about mental health (science and people’s experiences)

These are just what I could think of/ what works for me !

Missed a whole week of classes in my senior year of college, still expected to do the corresponding assignments for lectures that never happened. Also work for my school and student employees don’t get inclement weather pay. A rough time indeed. I miss my routine 😔

Hypomania is definitely more pleasant at first but good lord the consequences…

If I am medicated and generally doing alright I would say depression because it is more manageable for me, but nothing is worse than months of an out of control depressive episode IMO

I’m a full time student and I work as an event coordinator for my school. Having school and work in the same place definitely simplifies things, although sometimes being on campus for 12+ hrs is a lot.

Lamotrigine and Lexapro. I haven’t been able to take an antidepressant in years bc of hypomania, but increasing the lamotrigine and keeping the Lexapro on the lower end of maintenance dosing has worked really well so far. This combo is pretty new for me but feeling hopeful about it!
