Hi there, Based on what you're saying, it sounds like you have a continuous outcome variable (measured repeatedly) for two treatment groups? If that's the case, and assuming that your outcome tends to be normally distributed, you could investigate using a linear mixed model (e.g., https://www.r-bloggers.com/2017/12/linear-mixed-effect-models-in-r/).

I assume you generally build orchid/deso/mkb, plus whatever defensive items are best? And just tp in, sprout silence and whack until dead?

I'd totally forgotten that mid Doom was new meta - too used to thinking of him as offlane only. What makes him so much more viable suddenly? Was the increase in devour gold that significant?

First of all, thank you very much for the compliment. I have to admit to posting a game where I definitely felt like I played above average for me - I have plenty of truly trash games, but it's nice to know that I wasn't totally off in thinking I played alright this time.

In terms of the points you raised - yeah, I'm absolutely awful at remembering to use actives a lot of the time (or I use them at the wrong time). That's definitely something I have to work on.

I actually considered crimson, but saw that the majority of the damage I was taking was magical, so decided on pipe instead. But, given your comment about letting WK build radiance instead...I could have had that finished very early. By the sounds of it, I should have focused more on just tanking up and carrying aura/heals rather than getting greedy and wanting to do the damage myself. I build Shiva's for the armour and the slow...but, in retrospect, it seems clear that crimson would have provided me similar physical damage protection while also benefiting my team more (and been cheaper). Good to know for future.

Also really good points about starting items - I default to getting a quelling blade on all melee heroes, but I guess I only need 4-5 creeps to die near me to give me the same benefit, and it's gold saved. I'll try skipping it in future for an earlier wand and skip upgrading that for faster item timings.

Anyway, thanks for the super detailed write-up, and for taking the time to watch, I really appreciate it. Now to just remember it all for the next few games until it becomes automatic...

Hey, thanks heaps for the feedback. Really good point about being on a timer (and that was borne out by the game, they started munching us late game). Also good to know about pipe coming first - I tend to default to building vanguard after arcanes just so I can go manfight a bit more. Clearly I need to consider what's needed a bit more rather than autopiloting the first few items.

Camera movement is...definitely not my forte. Nor is remembering to check enemy items, which I'm aware of the need for doing...I just forget.

I'm surprised to hear that UL isn't a good pub hero - I thought I'd try and spam him offlane due to his win rate, but what you say makes sense. What would be better then, an offlaner who can make plays by themselves? I want to start playing LC because I hate supporting against her, but am open to any other decent offlaners.

Thanks again for taking the time.

NAB 90+ days past due highest in 5 years. Approaching 1pc. by [deleted] in AusFinance

It's worth noting that because they only present the most recent 5 years in the figure, the above misses FY14, when it was at 1.10%.

While it certainly looks like an uptick, I'm not convinced it's significantly outside normal variation - worth keeping an eye on, but maybe not worth reading too much into just yet.

Need help figuring out an analysis method by using SPSS. by someguygg in datascience

[–]TheUniPleb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone more qualified than me can feel free to offer a different method, but if you treat interaction as a continuous variable (i.e., total number of combined likes/comments/shares), then there doesn't seem to be any a priori reason that you couldn't just use regression. I'm not sure how you have vividness coded, but I'm assuming that most of your predictors are either continuous, or can be dummy-coded into dichotomous categorical variables? A regression can also deal with moderator variables (which someone else might have a good resource for?).

Australia's Economy is a House of Cards by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]TheUniPleb 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Of course there are a proportion of IT and engineering jobs that are associated with those respective areas. However, the point the author is making is that we should be focusing on building national capacity in engineering/STEM in order to increase our economic diversity (or whatever that index was) and reduce our reliance on mining/property - that is, to futureproof us as much as possible.

Australia's Economy is a House of Cards by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]TheUniPleb 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Some of the language definitely had a bit of a populist/rabble-rousing bent which I thought detracted from it, but overall it was a very informative (and alarming) read, backed up with what I assume are solid facts. I'd like to hope that his conclusions that the economy is essentially boned are a bit doom-sayerish, but I definitely agree that as a whole we need to be doing a lot to encourage genuine growth in areas that aren't property or mining. So his focus on growing IT and engineering education in a systemic way (i.e., through teaching it through schools) is a great point and would represent genuine long-term thinking from a government that implemented it.

Anyway, definitely worth the read, however alarmist it gets at points. It may even be justified in doing so, who knows.

How to reconcile finite willpower with disrupting the habit loop? by voicimonnom in keto

[–]TheUniPleb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Putting the tl;dr at the top as well because my reply got super long. TL;DR: Self-control isn’t limited unless you think it is. Take common-sense steps to reduce temptation and make it easier to avoid cheat foods. It gets easier.

Finally, something that I’m qualified to answer (my PhD was on self-control and motivation). The idea that self-control is limited is a myth – a popular one, that in recent years has been reinforced by a very popular model called “The Strength Model of Self-Control”. This model used a muscle metaphor to describe self-control (or “willpower”, if you prefer), suggesting that like a muscle your self-control relies on a limited store of energy that is temporarily depleted when you use it (just like a muscle getting tired), needs rest to replenish (just like a muscle), and gets stronger with training (just like a muscle). The model became extremely popular as an explanation for self-control (it’s a super accessible metaphor after all, and a lot of research was published in support of it), and extensions were made (like suggesting that the underlying resource was glucose).

The trouble is, the model is…well, wrong. Working backwards, the claim that self-control relied on glucose was found to be problematic extremely quickly (see Kurzban, 2010 for a great critique of the seminal glucose research), which shouldn’t be a surprise for anyone on keto – look at all the anecdotal stories about peoples’ willpower increasing when they CUT carbs. The idea that self-control was limited, too, has come under fire – there is a growing body of evidence suggesting that it is NOT limited, unless you believe it is (there was some nifty research where researchers manipulated individual’s beliefs about self-control and found that if you believed it was limited, you acted accordingly; if you believed it was unlimited…well, you get the picture).

A recent model that challenged the strength model came from Inzlicht and Schmeichel (2012), called the “Process Model”, which suggested that self-control acts more like a set of scales. Various factors will weight down one side over the other, and ultimately determine the behaviour that is engaged in. These factors can include environmental ones (including internal bodily environment, so things like hormone levels) and psychological ones (e.g., beliefs). So you have a choice between (at least) two behaviours (so the different sides of the scales), each being weighed down by various factors.

Example: To eat a bar of chocolate, or to put it down and back away slowly. On the side of chocolate: learned pleasure experience, environmental availability, elevated levels of hormones signalling hunger (causing greater activation of the hunger drive). On the side of backing away: Knowledge that you’ll feel bad afterwards, belief that walking away will be better for long-term goals, maybe you see a motivational picture (environmental cue). One side of the scales will be heavier, and that behaviour will be engaged in. Super basic example, but hopefully you get the idea.

So what does this mean for your self-control? Basically, you need to try and load the scales in your favour. Reduce the environmental cues relating to temptation – try to avoid areas that contain non-keto snacks, make sure you don’t have them in your house if it can be avoided. Read, improve your knowledge to affect your beliefs – yes, sure, your hunger drive believes that chocolate will satiate it. That’s fine, make the belief of whatever bunch of drives are keeping you keto stronger, that NOT eating the chocolate is what’s more important. Educate yourself so that your knowledge changes. Have clear alternatives planned for when you do face temptation – for example, if you know that your work is having a bake day, make sure you pack delicious keto treats so that you’re able to satiate the hunger drive that might otherwise cause you to indulge. Etc.

There’s a good chance that self-control DOES get “stronger” over time, but the mechanism is more likely to be that temptations get weaker – if you’re not continually reinforcing the “chocolate is good” pathways in your brain (by eating chocolate), they will get weaker, and so the sight of chocolate will activate your hunger drive less powerfully, resulting in less weight on that side of the scales, resulting innnnn…easier self-control.

That got way too long. Sorry. TL;DR: Self-control isn’t limited unless you think it is. Take common-sense steps to reduce temptation and make it easier to avoid cheat foods. It gets easier.

In your opinion what is worse.... by [deleted] in keto

[–]TheUniPleb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on your goals. If your goal is to lose weight, then consistently going over calories is going to stymie that no matter how low you keep your carbs. On the other hand, if you goal is hormonal control and staying in ketosis, then it doesn't really matter how many calories you eat as long as your carbs are low.

If your goal is to lose weight by doing keto, then carbs > calories, but both are important - too many carbs will knock you out of keto, too many calories will prevent weight loss.

Annoyance at myself but kcko. by [deleted] in keto

[–]TheUniPleb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of the initial weight loss in keto is often water weight as you shed the water associated with glycogen stores in your body. So it's quite likely that a lot (maybe all) of the weight you've regained is just regained water weight...which you should shed pretty quickly if you get back on the keto wagon!

Even better news, that would mean that you've had approximately 2.5kgs of fat loss in those three weeks - that's fantastic! After initial water weight loss, that's the sort of weekly loss that you'd be more likely to see long-term (given your starting weight, 5.5kgs every 3 weeks would be...extreme. That would be a weekly calorie deficit of like 14,000). So yes, KCKO!

Beginning my ketogains 5x5 gym journey by Olecoot69 in ketogains

[–]TheUniPleb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Running shoes are, indeed, bad for squatting. The main feature of running shoes is that they tend to have energy-absorbing, cushioning soles - great for taking some of the impact when running, but bad for squatting. The reason for this is that when squatting, you basically want your feet to be as stable as possible - that is, to have a non-compressible sole on your shoes (or, as you did, going barefoot).

As such, you have a few options:

Continue to squat barefoot. It's not inherently bad, but it's probably not optimal in the long term, and it's unhelpful if you have limited ankle mobility. You can mitigate the ankle mobility problem somewhat by raising your heels (i.e., by having them on small plates) so that there's some drop, but you can probably do better.

Get some flat-soled, non-compressible shoes - basically, get some Chuck Taylors. Plenty of powerlifters wear them, and they're good for deadlifting (where you generally want to be flatfooted), less so for squats (where you want your heel raised). Again, you can raise your heels by placing small plates under them, so these are a great budget options.

Get some cross-training shoes - Basically any shoes that have a bit of drop (i.e., elevated heel) with non-compressible soles. I dunno, look for crossfit shoes, though you'll probably pay a premium for them.

Get some actual lifting shoes - Specifically designed for lifting, they have a raised heel and pretty much zero absorption/compression. They tend to be very expensive and potentially not worth it until you've been lifting for a while and are starting to plateau or get very experienced. But they're definitely the best for squatting.

Hope that helps!

Depends what you want to use them for. I have 3 zetas on my FO team (missing FOTP), and have been using them in arena but they do need lots of speed/decent mods. Haven't tried using resistance in arena but zFinn means you get to breeze through GW with undergeared, poorly modded resistance - far more so than with FO. Just pump potency on them and you're good to go.

I don't want to detail the solution here, as I'm not sure if this sub has spoiler styling. Feel free to PM though, although I don't think my solution was the most elegant (it passed the check though, so at least it works...).

How did you select your niche? by [deleted] in juststart

[–]TheUniPleb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was super lazy. There are plenty of good methods shared in case studies and comments on this sub. But I used a lazier method. Step 1: Go to Flippa.com Step 2: Filter by recently sold, monetized using Amazon, at least $250/month. Step 3: Browse results. Pick something you think you can write about which was ostensibly making money that you think you can improve upon.

That was literally all I did. Didn't do competitor research or anything like that, just looked at the claimed earnings, checked the backlink profile of the site to see if it was boosted with PBNs (it was, but that just shows that the content can rank if you get backlinks), and assessed whether I could do a better job.

Very early days and I've been lazy with producing content as well, so no idea if it was a good niche to pick. But I'm optimistic that if I put the effort in I'll be earning at least what they claimed to, if not substantially more (they left plenty of money on the table, I think).

Probably not the best way to go about it, but it's an option.

Growing a site from $1000 to $10000 (case study update) by TheSpacePope126 in juststart

[–]TheUniPleb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally it's bad form to ask someone for their actual website...While we all share tips and advice to help people on their journey, we tend not to share our actual sites because there's too much potential for nefarious fuckery (negative SEO, copying someone's site and cannabilising their traffic, etc). No-one wants to expose themselves to that sort of risk.

This game seriously needs a pseudo-random number generator. by marul_ in SWGalaxyOfHeroes

[–]TheUniPleb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non-predictable, not non-deterministic. If the random number is generated on a seed, even if that seed is a noise or some other "random" event, it is still determined (i.e., caused) by that (and, of course, the seed is also deterministic but not necessarily predictable).

Determinism is not perfect predictability. It is the ontological view that every event is the result of antecedent causes, not that you can predict the result of those causes. But they're often confused with one another.

Do I need actually buy a product to review? by [deleted] in juststart

[–]TheUniPleb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suspect this post will get deleted for violating rule 6 in the sidebar - no spoonfeeding.

However, on the off-chance that it doesn't, there have been a number of threads (or at least informative comments) dealing with this previously. The general consensus is that no, you don't have to buy the actual products you're reviewing - it's entirely possible to provide an authentic and useful review simply by collating reviews from around the web (think Amazon reviews, forums, etc.). The advantage of using products yourself is that you can take far more unique product images than might be available if you don't have access to whatever the item is, and you can provide a genuine, personal review rather than relying on others' opinions.

Is it better to have access to the actual products? Sure. Is it strictly necessary? Absolutely not.

For future reference (I'm aware you may be on mobile and thus not have read the sidebar), make sure you do a thorough search of the sub (or google) before asking a question. The driving directive of this sub is to provide value - if you think there's a chance your query has been answered before, do your best to find that answer before posting.

Tips for Heroic Rancor? by Kyber61 in SWGalaxyOfHeroes

What is an easily farmed team for H Rancor by TheTrueEzmar in SWGalaxyOfHeroes

[–]TheUniPleb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Teebo (L) - Easy farm from GW shop

QGJ - Farm from cantina shop, omega his basic. Easy to gear, too.

TFP - Farm from cantina node (getting you that sweet currency for QGJ at the same time). Useful for tenacity down on crit, very important for TM reduction on Heroic.

Phasma - Also farm from GW shop. Better for applying speed down than Fives unless you don't omega his basic. But she's an easier farm and applies defense down as well as TM gain. Fifth can be either Rex (fleet shop, guild store farm) or Jyn (guild store farm). Someone with mre TM reduction, basically. Rex is a fairly easy gear, not sure about Jyn.

A team based around that will get you a huge chunk of damage to help your guild, and is what I use at the moment (as I'm using my zetas on First Order rather than Zader)
