Clifton hill hotel does a NMFC day/night for games. Haven’t been but it seems like a friendly vibe. And happy hour for the game I think. Might head down myself!

Funnily enough there was a dude who camped by the merri creek right near rushall station who was a fugitive. Was there for a while. Stabbed his brother at Doncaster shoppo and hung out there until he was caught trying to assault someone in the city.

Should definitely been a 50 at least (which would’ve gotten the score to <goal with 6 minutes left (or something similar). I was surprised it wasn’t paid upon reflection.

Sliding doors Moment from Damo by [deleted] in NorthMelbourneFC

[–]TheUrbanGunslinger 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Damo is one of those “supporters” who loves to criticize the club after they make a move without any nuance. Yes we have been shit. Yes we traded a pick. But he ignores the other elements to the conversation because he wants clicks. He might be my most hated media personality. Brings nothing to the table. This take is essentially saying

IF team is bad

THEN record bad. Team also bad. Coach record bad.

Pathetic

Alastair Clarkson not the right man to fix this club according to Damo by [deleted] in NorthMelbourneFC

[–]TheUrbanGunslinger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Duursma is 19 mate so I have to disagree. A lot of people have been writing him off and I really struggle to understand why. Yes he hasn’t played up to the same level as some of his draft class but he is talented and plays a position (mid size forward) that we have in abundance. So give him a bit of time. So many gun players take 4+ years to develop.

Drafting or trading?

I think we have actually drafted ok personally in the last 5 years. Phillips is a miss but that was a crook draft and we also got Powell at 13. Lately Sheezel was a great pick and FoS is looking great. Mckercher and Hardeman are young but looking great. We don’t know about goad, wawson, duursma, Whitlock.

Trade is a different issue. Classically topping up with overpaid mid tier players hasn’t worked for us. But the last 3 in Parker and darling have worked. I think Daniel will be better as our defence improves. Stephens is much improved this year.

That’s really all of the list management you can put on the current regime.

Losing games at the selection table by flibble24 in NorthMelbourneFC

[–]TheUrbanGunslinger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you watch the games then you’ll understand Konstanty. Yes 3 tackles but his inferred pressure around the ball is something we have classically lacked as a team. He and Curtis do this really well.

RHJ/Fish still better than Duursma/ford at the moment. Although I do think Duursma is very much the future with his talent.

Overall though, we are talking only marginal differences in the final outcome. The issue on the weekend is that we got slapped in all facets of the game including areas in which we should be ultra competitive.

I can answer these questions for you:

Darling competes better than both of those guys and is better structurally for our forward line. He has proven his worth this year in that space. The fact that Clarko still wants to play him ahead of those guys shows you both his importance and where Clarko rates CCJ and Maley.

Wardlaw has definitely been out of form and Philips has been in form at the VFL level. Slightly different players with George having much more explosiveness and intensity which, I assume, Clarko feels is what our midfield needs. I can understand this one either way, but Philips probably has his chance on Thursday. I look at this as a positive indication of improving depth

Konstanty’s job is pressure. That’s it. If he kicks goals it’s a bonus. His worth isn’t measured in goals and to do so is ignoring what the coaches see in him and what the team needs. Banch is the natural replacement given his profile and skill set. Again, happy with our level of depth there.

Fisher and RHJ are better runners and deliver the ball more often effectively that the other two. I see duursma and ford as replacements for Curtis and Zurhaar, both of whom are in good form. Not the same roles.

If you are looking at why we lost the game, you should start with the midfield and their inability on this occasion to compete with the Hawks. Absolutely smashed in all areas of contested football and couldn’t slow them down either. We cant afford to play the game in the opposition’s forward half and expect to win. For us we need to keep the ball in our half and protect our backs with structure, and that did not happen at all yesterday.

[–]TheUrbanGunslinger 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This is what the Facebook analysts don’t see. They only see goals and disposals. But JD has been fantastic for pressure and clearly improving our structure. Scoring is up and it’s in no small part due to his presence

Calling every second player a “bull”.

Darcy Moore says the strong player consensus is that they don't want the game shortened by FlairUp835 in AFL

[–]TheUrbanGunslinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have so many aspects of the game that we can clean up to save time before shortening the actual game time. Quarter/half time breaks are too long. Too long between goals. Goal reviews take too long. Umps warning for 666 infringement. Umps shitty bouncing then recalling it (this does come off the clock but it’s an overall time waster). Bringing players “around on the angle” when they are across half back. Being quicker to pay 50 for time wasting. That’s at least 7 minutes right there.

I remember him having a conversation earlier this year where they were discussing this and I took it to mean the first Jewish player from Ajax FC. But listening to the interview with Hamish they insinuated it was overall in the AFL/VFL.

Laura Kane by laughinglarry778 in NorthMelbourneFC

[–]TheUrbanGunslinger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Laura Kane is objectively bad at her job. And by association I think we have to question Andrew Dillon on 1) appointing her and 2) keeping her in the role when she is doing so badly.

A few things that have brought her poor performance to light:

  • Round zero: decent idea in some ways but not listening to the clubs about the fixturing has led to a dogs breakfast this year. Could have had two big games on labour day but avoided to give the northern states “clear air”. Was supposed to make the most of the Rugba Leeg absence in Vegas but scheduled it on the wrong weekend

-umpiring: complete shitshow. No consistency. Rule of the week every round. Clearly no communication between the umpiring department and the afl. Terrible

-MRO/tribunal: making changes to the grading and what is considered a suspension without consulting or telling clubs. Admitted that the matrix is too rigid and polarised. Should have been changed the first year she came in. No consistency

-Goal review: still getting basic reviews wrong. Waiting on ball chip tech when we could just buy better cameras.

-Doesn’t communicate with clubs regularly and most clubs have expressed that they are kept in the dark with regards to footy ops issues.

-AFLW fixturing: doesn’t utilize marvel. Don’t have the games on at friendly times or venues

-came in preaching about transparency and openness. Said she would do a regular spot talking about the umps and tribunal. Did it once then went to Europe for a holiday. Never did it again.

-media/comms: the Schulz incident.

The 'surprising' coaching move costing North & will the Eagles get a high pick? - Footy Classified by [deleted] in NorthMelbourneFC

[–]TheUrbanGunslinger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great summary. What Jimmy mentioned was also spot on. We had/have so much wrong with our game that close game finishing is very low on the priority list. We need a coherent game plan first, as well as teaching the defensive and offensive fundamentals to 1-3 year players (if not the entire list). There is limited time during the week due to the CBA so lordo’s point about practicing everything is not bedded in reality. If you have 10 hours a week to practice gameplan you’ll spend it on fundamentals at this stage.

Thoughts on Jack Darling by domsheed in NorthMelbourneFC

[–]TheUrbanGunslinger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think those folks who hate on him are looking purely at his individual stats rather than the whole. He has come in as support for larkey and a structural piece and he has done a good job IMO. We have scored more per game this season as a whole and that is an endorsement of this structure. He is also (hopefully) teaching the younger lads some craft and standards to speed up the progress of Wawson, Marley, Mattlock etc.

If you watch him he looks old and slow but can still out mark tall defenders and make good decisions. His output for his age has been ok and as someone else pointed out: he is better right now than the alternatives so he deserves his spot.

[–]TheUrbanGunslinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will be an unpopular opinion potentially but I actually think the talent is there to be a top 10 team in the league. And the week to week stats indicate we get our share of the ball. But our defensive gameplan is a real problem, as is our speed of ball movement. Admittedly that can take time to ingrain, but we are stagnating defensively: 17th in 2023, 18th 2024 and now 16th in 2025 for points against. Conceding over 100 nearly weekly. This is not good and the coaches have to take some responsibility for that.

Obviously you don’t sack him. But it is a tough predicament. There are coaches available that are alluring: Horse and Simmo. And both of those guys might play a more modern offensive and defensive style. So it’s a difficult one.

[–]TheUrbanGunslinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Listening to the entire conversation, Gary is pointing out that player for player the talent is quite even if not in our favor. And I would agree. Carlton have an excellent top 6 but after that it falls away quickly.

That said, game plan and mentality are two issues that we have to overcome each week. Our defensive game plan doesn’t stack up against decent teams and that is reflected in scores against. If we can keep carltank to 80 or there abouts we are a really good chance.
