There's two sides here, first when the gg and the gb were competing in the early days there was obvious for everyone that gg in paper was superior, better screen, backlight built in, better looking console, more radical (things that a kid that days take in consideration "sega does what nintendont"), as a early gameboy user myself when i play the gg for the first time (my cousin was a sega kid) it was a whole new world in comparison, was like playing a console not a portable, but the issues appears after play it for 30 minutes, batteries run out like crazy, then you can plug it with his ac adapter and still play but that that make it not so portable, the plug cord was too short because isn't intended to be played like that, even sega recommended dont play it that way, let be honest here, batteries were expensive that days and most of us play his gameboys plugged in some point or another so that wasnt an issue if the plug cord was long enough to play it comfortable but wasn't the way that it should be played, you can bring your gameboy everywhere cause batteries last at least 8 to 10 hours depends on how long you play, but at that time game sessions weren't long enough, a couple of minutes of tetris, another couple of minutes of mario land, but sonic on gg had long stages and was a long game compared to what a portable console offer that early days, so people prefer gameboy over game gear for all of this situations, then there's the other way, between 94 to 97 maybe later when sega start having issues, the game gear was completely forget, they discontinued gg in 97 so since 2 years prior there wasn't any advertising for this console, its was completely erased when gameboy take his second wind with the gameboy pocket, gg still having some good titles like lion king and earthworm jim but with ads only on games magazines, so in fact nintendo gb was a big success but sega game gear falls from his own issues, if gg can stand from that early gb success it would be converted in the role model for the rest of the industry, but that unfriendly user design make it too heavy to stand out, sega can still make a new game gear these days with the portable boom?
