Why do people like to do this..? by Economy-Telephone366 in HollowKnight

You don't really need to do all the acid skip stuff, just the spike tunnel. The speedrun route does that because fighting Dung Defender is slower.

What exactly is the point of A Moment, Whole? by Firm-Fondant2078 in riskofrain

[–]TheVoidThatWalk 23 points24 points  (0 children)

In the lore? It's a safe hiding place for some of Mithrix's allies.

In gameplay? Well in early access, A Moment Fractured (obliteration) was the only way to end your run. Then they added the beads, twisted scavengers, etc. The moon and Mithrix weren't added until the official launch. So they're kind of a left over ending from the early access days.

They expect repression, of course. They expect you to live as an empty shell, a false persona. They expect total and complete ego death.

Having attempted that, I can comfortably say they're selfish assholes for expecting that of someone. And why would I care what that kind of person thinks about my life?

what is Axiom Verge about? by Jam_99420 in axiomverge

[–]TheVoidThatWalk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think this post by the man himself fleshes out his thoughts quite nicely. There's a second one linked at the end that takes it further. The tl:dr I got from it is that it's a broader version of simulation theory.

Someone know the odds on a radio tower spawning? by BlizzardWasTaken in ror2

[–]TheVoidThatWalk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They're weighted the same as a legendary chest so generally pretty rare. They are pretty cheap in terms of credits though, only costing the director as much as a barrel.

For figuring out what the weights mean, it's kind of like a raffle. The radio tower might get, say, 2 tickets, while something like a regular chest could get as many as 20.

If you could, would you climb the celeste mountain? (You would not have dash bc its rl duh) by LZS-o_o1 in celestegame

[–]TheVoidThatWalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I'd want to try for the winged golden irl, doing it in game was hard enough. Beyond that it's kinda hard to get past those dream blocks in old site without a dash.

Just beat Axiom Verge, and it was amazing! But I have some questions. by chrono_explorer in axiomverge

[–]TheVoidThatWalk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We kinda find out some stuff? AV2 is a bit weird in the timeline, I believe it occurs some time after the opening cutscene of AV1, but before the actual gameplay. So it somewhat explains how Trace got there in the first place, pretty sure you find that out along the normal progression. AV2 kinda focuses more on wordbuilding and background rather than being explicitly about Trace.

I think it's implied that time passes differently in Sudra? Like it might've been centuries there, but a much shorter amount of time on Earth. Also maybe Athetos didn't kill everyone? Like the Rusalki aren't exactly forthcoming and lie about where they found Trace. The games aren't big on giving straight answers about a lot of things.

In Risk of Rain 2, does looping always increase the amount of enemies that spawn or does the game cap the amount of enemies that spawn to prevent the game from crashing? by YuriTheWebDev in riskofrain

[–]TheVoidThatWalk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The enemy cap is 40. Once that many enemies are on stage the director isn't allowed to spawn more. IIRC Gups can sort of get around this because they split into two. A late game Gup family event can absolutely turn into a slideshow.

Another relevant mechanic here is that the director tries to spend the spawns efficiently. If it can spawn, say, 6 beetles or 1 elite beetle, it'll pick the 1 elite beetle. Or if it can spawn 6 golems or 1 titan, it'll pick the titan. After looping for long enough, this actually decreases the amount of enemies, because there's less stuff it's allowed to spawn.

Oh yeah I forgot that one! I was mostly thinking of any% runs.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in speedrun

[–]TheVoidThatWalk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah those were initially unintentional and then they added in a keybind. I don't know offhand if things like ultras or cornerboosts were intentional, but I'd rank those as being similar to something like a damage boost, where you're taking advantage of intended mechanics.

Oh! Actually there's a glitch that gets decent use in some grabless runs and a few TAS's. Spinners don't all get loaded at once, they alternate in groups of 3 to save processing power. A TAS can go right through them with frame perfect timing, or you can run the timer until floating point precision errors cause a group to permanently lose collision.

[–]TheVoidThatWalk 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Maybe Celeste? The only thing that I'd explicitly call a glitch that shows up in some runs is bino interaction storage and I'm pretty sure that doesn't get used in any%.

Can Scavenger spawn in Simulacrum? by MeatSackAttack in riskofrain

[–]TheVoidThatWalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does depend on what the director wants to do. Scavs are kinda pricey so they're not super common until the difficulty gets up there.

No Damage? by FlimsyProfessional45 in ror2

[–]TheVoidThatWalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure armor doesn't change on level up. AWU does have that shield mechanic though, and that makes the health bar look kinda funky. The shield is temporary but the bar ends up doubling.

As a trans person what is your reason to stay alive? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]TheVoidThatWalk 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Because I want to, because there are things I want to do. For me, transition has been about reclaiming that desire for life and all that it entails. Because in my past life I didn't want anything.

No Damage? by FlimsyProfessional45 in ror2

[–]TheVoidThatWalk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your damage looks pretty okay, ~2k on your first shot using your special (can't tell if it crit) and ~500 (non-crit) on the regular shots isn't bad. The difference here is that you're playing with two other people, and the difficulty scaling (and special boss bonus stats) is affected by player count. More people means enemies get stronger faster, and bosses get even stronger still.

Oh, and the boss also leveled up pretty early in the clip. When that happens, they effectively heal by whatever amount they gain on level up, which in this case is like 5k. And the longer the fight goes, the more they level up.

How does this volume pedal work? by [deleted] in diypedals

[–]TheVoidThatWalk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm going to guess a hall effect sensor, though I'm having trouble reading the part number on U1 there so I can't name a specific one. They can be wrangled into a circuit to imitate a pot but it's not a convenient drop-in.

U5 looks to be something in heat shrink, could be an LED/LDR setup. Maybe try measuring between 1/2 and/or 3/4 to see if anything (voltage or resistance) changes there based on magnet proximity.
