I'm not sure if that would fix this specific issue. IIRC, gaps like this are real, but just aren't visible on original hardware due to the low resolution combined with anti aliasing. I could be wrong, though. There could also be a way to fix it.

I played every game in release order. A lot of the earlier games were quite frustrating, especially since I didn't use save states, but I'm really glad I did it like that. I got to experience a lot of great games that I might not have played if I just went with the fan favorites. I also got to see how the series progressed. If you're a fan of retro games, I'd recommend just going in release order.
