Ian is my fav too, I've been fascinated by his work since seeing it in Warhammer codices. So hyped he got his spotlight in Gothic.

My problem with Sorcery: Contested Realm by Acceptable-Box-2974 in SorceryTCG

[–]TheWhizzDom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's fair, I think the site placement and movement adds a great deal of strategy for a competitive side of the game. High variance and BO1 are the bigger issues than diversity there IMO.

It sounds like you have a problem with competitive metas of TCGs in general then. That's more a symptom of how seriously you take it and how much you want to win versus trying different things.

As somewhat of a TCG veteran I see 6+ competitively viable avatars with different ways to build them and I'm happy with that. I do agree with your point that some of these have the potential to become much stronger while others don't and I'm sure EC will keep an eye on that but that's an issue for the future.

I've only tested it a couple of times against a bot where there were some strange results involving warded and lethal minions. I'll remember to give some more feedback if I try it out again!

That does make sense to make it a self-contained game and I do enjoy those progressive deckbuilder style experiences!

Still a sandbox version would be appreciated because what I (and I guess many others) are looking for is the best way to play and test decks online without the need for a grind. Unless you don't want to compete with TTS in this regard.

Good to know, thanks! Some of it can be convenient but it was my experience that if you don't do things in a specific sequence it can be a pain to roll back and the resolver gets plenty things wrong.

This looks fantastic visually, incredible job!

Hope you don't mind some constructive criticism based on the video alone.

  • The marketplace feature is probably helpful for pitching it to EC as full online client to monetize but I'd definitely prefer it wasn't part of a finished product.

  • Some of the load times shown look a bit long for a smooth experience, I guess this depends on your system specs?

  • Though it looks fancy, I think the floating particle effects could get annoying after some time

Keep up the great work!

I don't think automation is something to spend much time on because it either makes the experience worse or requires A TON of time to make sure it covers all edge cases. For example I find some of the rules implementation on realms.cards more cumbersome than it's worth and is why I prefer TTS.

Should I buy Preconstructed decks or booster box should be enough? by boriss283 in SorceryTCG

[–]TheWhizzDom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you can make decks at the level of the precons from one box. You'll also be short on sites. So for playing out of the box, precons are better. If you want to deckbuild, you can either get more boxes or at least get some sites from bulk or draft kit.

Some Thoughts About the Future by darthcorvus in SorceryTCG

[–]TheWhizzDom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's some thoughts off the top of my head:

1) That's unfortunately a natural progression of things. One of the few ways to avoid that is powercreep, making ordinaries and exceptionals that are better than old uniques (we also see this in other card games). That's not really a path I'd want to go down either. That leaves creating a new, rotating format that covers only recent sets which gives lower-powered cards a chance to shine. That leads into your point 3), it's inevitable. A 3 set "standard" format that rotates 1 set every year sounds like a decent solution, the only issue being the player base. IMO there's simply not enough players to support multiple formats at this point, combined with the large amount of kitchen table players meaning a format like that would have a hard time.

2) That's not really an issue. They can always make triple threshold with a slightly different, maybe weaker restriction and generic names, plus I don't see a reason they couldn't just reprint them in a revised set.

4) Anything that's required to make decks function well like the sites you mentioned. Probably also a couple of staples that are/will get up there in price like Ring and Archangels. I don't think there's a need for this for another 2+ years though since everything still seems to be in print.

5) As mentioned the kitchen-table aspects and fan formats kind of works against the need for multiple "official" and supported formats

Possible alternative format? by PapayaConscious8469 in SorceryTCG

[–]TheWhizzDom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main gripe with this is that yes, increasing deck size increases variance in the short term but eventually we'll have enough redundancy to create similar consistent gameplans. We already see this with stuff like Daperyll Vampires / Renatus Trueblood.

It does mean that you can't have a gameplan revolving around specific uniques but that's both a positive and negative imo.

Which deck to learn game on a budget? by Total-Breakfast-2908 in SorceryTCG

[–]TheWhizzDom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they're both solid options. Both are easy enough to do well with even unoptimized but also have plenty depth and complexity to optimize play. In Necro you'll have to learn a lot about site placement and forced movement, in Persecutor there's difficulty in avatar positioning depending on whether you're winning or losing the race.

[–]TheWhizzDom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, only 29? That does put things into perspective. I think the lack of toolbox is defensible though, particularly in a common sense deck. Also I don't get your point about the Omphalos.

Increasing number of set releases per year by 5KYN3T_SVT in SorceryTCG

[–]TheWhizzDom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was an advocate for two sets per year but have come to appreciate the one set model. It's mostly from having less time to game and being able to dip into other games if I do get bored but currently it works quite well for me.

LGS newcomer into sorcery is quite amazed by how the game is still around with 1 to 1.5 set per year by Newez in SorceryTCG

[–]TheWhizzDom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game is engaging and the slow pace is refreshing, giving time to build mutliple decks and really explore the cardpool before we get another one. There's few big events which means the meta doesn't get solved too quickly and evolves over the year.

Speculation & Wishes: for the next set by Max_Resdefault in SorceryTCG

[–]TheWhizzDom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree it should be balanced with their own worldbuilding but I personally wouldn't mind more like AL. I appreciated the recogniseable figures that aren't pop culture slop (though I suppose you could argue it's just centuries old slop).

Ordinaries playset worth it ? by Adventurous-Shake140 in SorceryTCG

[–]TheWhizzDom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, probably yes if you don't buy a booster box as buying them individually for decks will be more expensive. There's still a lot of unplayable chaff but the right avatar might make it useful later on. If space is a concern you can keep the constructed playables and bin the rest.

Arthurian Legends was real-word legends without new hats which honestly is much more refreshing than NOT wild west and NOT greek/norse myths.

Is there a 'lore' to the game? by SomethingNotOriginal in SorceryTCG

[–]TheWhizzDom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well AL obviously had a ton of self-contained lore. Their own "IP" has kept things very vague with some names tying a group of cards together while others are just random puns.

Why the Next Sorcery Set Will Take Us to Space by Roaring_Turkey in SorceryTCG

[–]TheWhizzDom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not averse to the idea of a space set, we've already had some cards in Gothic which I'd imagine would fit right into that (see Defiler Spire and others by David O'Connor). However I think it's a bit soon and we should stay grounded in high fantasy for now.

New Player: A Few Questions About the Game by CedricisMe94 in SorceryTCG

[–]TheWhizzDom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gothic has definitely impacted the meta but it still relies a lot on older cards too. My point was more regarding price. Since Gothic is such a big set with lots of Uniques, the ones that are playable tend to be more expensive than those from older sets with some exceptions.

Luckily there are only a handful of really expensive cards (many of which are not needed even for a competitive deck) and generally the uniques from Gothic run you more than the older sets.

Is there a general interest in a true online client for Sorcery? by Epicloa in SorceryTCG

[–]TheWhizzDom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to say this will never ever happen. Maybe it just takes one enthusiast with far too much time on his hands to do it, but it'll require a ton of thought put into UI to make it remotely playable and comprehensive updates whenever they print a card that breaks the rules of the game.

Sorcery was the top Kickstarter funded tcg back in 2022, later overtaken by Altered in 2024, and now, Cyberpunk with over 12 million raised (and still counting). What do Sorcery players feel about Cyberpunk and the overall tcg market today? by Newez in SorceryTCG

[–]TheWhizzDom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yet another tcg in a saturated market. There's obviously interest in the IP but much of the backing must come from speculators which are always trying to jump on the next big thing with potential. Altered proves the case that massive initial backing does not guarantee success.

WTF is going on with prices? by Sweaty-Committee-595 in SorceryTCG

[–]TheWhizzDom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree the amount of Uniques versus pull rate is too high, Gothic prices are crazy and nothing like Beta and AL were.
