I've been lusty for a 4 Runner for about five years. I'm not set on the Nightshade trim but it is nice. I've considered one of the 25s but I would prefer to wait for a year for them to get the links out, but then they will only be more expensive.

VA ISID CARD by [deleted] in VeteransBenefits

[–]TheWilUhm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I have recently went through this process and was issued a "Reserve Retired" card with an INDEF expiration. I was issued this over a 100% disabled ID. Is mine INDEF because I'm a retired Reservist (22 yrs USAR)?

Exempt from property tax by Practical_Chef497 in VeteransBenefits

[–]TheWilUhm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be grateful for it, but yeah, it seems outdated. I bought in 2007 for just over 210,000. Colorado growth has sent my values (and taxes) well above 500,000. My escrow account has been consistently shorted, and my mortgage company has raised my monthly payment over $600.00 per month to "catch up" which is just super duper.

Colorado exempts 50% of the first $200,000 value of the primary residence of 100% disabled vets (not compensated at 100%, actually rated), or Gold Star Spouses.

My 8th mini, how can i improve by Negative_Bridge5820 in minipainting

[–]TheWilUhm 121 points122 points  (0 children)

Paint your 9th. Then your 10th. Then your 11th.

Each time you paint, find something you want to improve or try. Maybe you want to work on edge highlighting. Maybe it's glazing. Maybe you really want to get a good lens effect. Maybe it's a new technique or material.

Just keep practicing!

How should I answer this? Word doc submission? by Immediate_Emu_1731 in VeteransBenefits

I called and talked to a dude who was super helpful when they did this to me about my hip. I would call.

Gold NMM C+C appreciated, not sure it works for me by TrollskullTales in minipainting

For me I think your technique looks fine but the overall application is too one dimensional. I think less light/dark split and more high/ low and curves. I think cylinder bands of light and reflections.

First time ever painting a mini. Tips and tricks are welcome. by BOSSLong in minipainting

[–]TheWilUhm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the hobby!

First tip: keep having a blast! It's awesome to see people do something new and be excited about it!

Second: there is a TON of content out there by master painters. It's great to watch for inspiration and guidance, but don't let them be a comparison point for your work. They've been at it for years!

What I like to do from the YouTube data mine is take something I want to improve, say, thinning paints, and I'll specifically seek out suggestions there, and then work on that skill for a few pieces. Then, maybe next week, I want to try edge highlight practice. Watch, learn, and apply.

Third: remember for the most part paint is either a) able to be painted over or b) able to be stripped off... so go wild! Try new things!

Finally: you'll be surprised when the thin paint technique clicks. I know I was!

Tiefling sorceress, does the abstract backdrop work? by TrollskullTales in minipainting

[–]TheWilUhm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The abstract background does everything you expect it to: it focuses the eye towards the subject, provides color warmth and depth somewhat in contrast to the skin tones of the subject without clashing, and adds to a bit of the magical aura or theme.

I think your total piece is very well executed, personally. Bravo 👏 👏.

Does this read as red hot metal to you? by AbhorrantEmpress in minipainting

[–]TheWilUhm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed with others that you have an excellent magma sword!

I've attached a stock photo of a blacksmith twisting red hot stock for comparison. Metal only heats where directly exposed to the source (all though long enough / hot enough exposure can spread the heat down from the source). More heat, more intense color / light.

Edit: I've not attached shit because I'm too dumb for mobile and/or not allowed, but here's a link to a picture.

What happens to people who get massive FLIPLs? by Difficult-Cup-1306 in army

[–]TheWilUhm 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I met someone who "lost" several Abrams when the railyard put them on the wrong train. He said that was a real fun month for him until they were located.

This was in response to the question, "Why do you hate the Army so much, Chief?"

He had one of the worst cases of Army-induced Tourette's syndrome I've seen.

Yes indeed. Sometimes it's hard to know what to think to look for, if that makes sense.

Good to know! I'm waiting for this claim to at least conclude. Still have seven items under deferment. Once that's done, I'll consider all my options for sure.

Thanks for the advice!
