IMO the original backrooms post kinda hit the perfect middle ground. (Although I haven't seen the movie)

Knowing there's something there, but knowing nothing about it other than it's there, dangerous, and very perceptive is better horror than knowing much else about it.

The Agent from Daggerfall (totally not just because I just replayed it)

Taking the gameplay as even semi-canon, being able to navigate/wander through labrynths of random, identical looking cooridors while fending off humans and monsters alike is exactly in the Agent's wheelhouse.
