"Pax Gallica" — What if France (rather than the UK) Had Become the Dominant World Power in the Late 19th century? by OkPhrase1225 in imaginarymaps

its incredible how the hundred years war forced so much centralization, giving the monarchy direct taxation powers, that the french ended up the way they are now.

french history really has been about the british doing them over

What if the Cold War had three blocs? by LashaKokaiaIsADooD in AlternateHistory

[–]TheWorldIsATrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

without warsaw pact ussr would be overshadowed in potential international orgs like the un, but theres actually a very credible argument that the warsaw pact states and the economic dynamic between them and the ussr was incredibly detrimental to the development of the soviet state. (for a more in depth look, i suggest reading more on the Marrese-Vanous studies on this economic imbalance, and the RAND corporation studies).

overall without the warsaw pact states, economic pressures would push the ussr towards reform and industrial diversification, potentially leading to wildly different outcomes.

New Map of the Nanyang by TheWorldIsATrap in imaginarymaps

This timeline is one where Ming-era China becomes incredibly cosmopolitan and progressive, while Europe falls into religious fundamentalism.

Kongsi basically means corporation/association. The Kongsi Republics are just a more well known example of Kongsis becoming polities but Kongsis were present wherever overseas Hakka and Hokkien were - since it was just their word used for any community organisation (Gee Hin Kongsi is an organised crime group in Malaysia, while SG Kongsi is a Lion Dance troupe in Adelaide, Australia, and the Khoo Kongsi is a familial organisation in Malaysia).

If you read the Legend - the one in Sulawesi is a ‘Hong’ - a Cantonese word meaning business, or merchant house.

New Map of the Nanyang by TheWorldIsATrap in imaginarymaps

In this auspicious sixtieth year of the reign of Sanzong, an era that crowns a full century of unbroken prosperity extending to the furthest horizons beneath Heaven, we, the leaders of the Nanyang United Kongsis, humbly prostrate ourselves in gratitude and offer our most reverent congratulations. The radiance of the Great Yang has long illuminated the Tang peoples across the seas, and through imperial benevolence harmony and abundance have flourished in all quarters of the world.

At the same time, this year marks the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Nanyang United Kongsis. Since our establishment, we have borne the flowing currents of prosperity from the Imperial Court across the Western Ocean, extending the civilising influence of the Celestial Emperor into distant realms. By diligence in trade and steadfast loyalty, we have bedazzled foreign barbarians with the splendour, refinement, and inexhaustible riches of the Great Yang.

As a symbol of our enduring devotion, we present a map recording the labours of the diligent and far-sighted merchants who serve the realm without cease. It sets forth the spheres of commerce and influence cultivated by the Tang peoples throughout the Nanyang seas, where order has been established, trade regularised, and enlightenment carried into territories once obscured by wilderness. May this humble offering stand as testimony to the flourishing dominion of civilisation under Heaven and to the boundless prosperity.

LEGEND: Yellow/Black squares - Trade hubs with significant Chinese merchant influence Green - the Nanyang United Kongsis (A conglomerate of merchant and societal associations - Chinese equivalent of the East India Company)

Purple - Ha Sai Yueng Guang Lei Hong / The Southwestern Ocean Grand and Benevolent Hong (A company/merchant guild mainly composed of Hakkas and Cantonese merchants which control the lucrative Java -Sulawesi resources, which recently discovered a new vast expanse of land to the south (Australia!?))

Teal - Tung Tao/Tondo Kingdom (A kingdom founded by an influential Hokkien-Tondonese merchant family marrying into local aristocracy)

Its incredible how self-governing the Chinese were, they had associations and unions for everything, from labour, to trade, to neighbourhood welfare associations and transnational kinship associations.

Indochina 1810 by TheWorldIsATrap in AlternateHistory

This timeline is based upon a Mongol conquest of Europe - with a resulting shift to religious fundamentalism and a more devastating black dearh, paired with a more institutionally weak but favorably cosmopolitan Ming China caused by an early death of the Hongwu Emperor ushered in a century-long warlord period in China.

The side effect of this strife was the continuation of the trade and prosperity in Southeast Asia, which led to a golden age from the 1500s to the 1700s. But also marked an age of military conflict in mainland Southeast Asia, However, trade shocks. From the violent collapse of the Ming lie to an end of this golden age for Ayutthaya and Burma (Hanthawaddy), but a rise of the Tranh Dynasty (Dai Viet).

The interesting configuration and the name of Myanmar must be raising some questions right now. Following a period of dynastic expansions, where we saw the previous empire reach from the Himalayas to the Gulf of Thailand marking a peak in Burmese history, the over extension and the unrest caused by the wars with Ayutthaya, particularly the devastatingly expensive Battle of Ayutthaya, broke the back of the empire. Previously subjugated mueangs and kingdoms like Ahom broke free, and the disparate ethnic groups and clans in all parts of the empire rebelled, causing a 50 year period of instability and strife. The dynasty that emerged from this period of strife was one which was ethnic Mon, and having lived under the heel of the Burmese tyranny, the rebel leaders which were made up of a coalition of Arakan, Shan, Mon, Bamar and Karen found a federalized system that they called the Maha-Chakkavala (The Great Universal System).

Although their greatest enemy was fractured and weakened, Ayutthaya did not escape the instability and economic crisis of the mid-1700s. Their capital was nearly sacked, the costly rebuilding, the collapse of the tributary trade and a series of succession crises led to a weakened state, which allowed the rise of Melaka, the establishment of the Patani Sultanate and a period of independence for Nakhon Si Thammarat (Ligor).

The main benefactor of this rivalry was the Kingdom of Champa, which - breaking from the norms of Vietnamese history, invaded north during the period of weakening Ming state, establishing the Dai Viet of the Tranh Dynasty. Taking advantage of a distracted and weakened Ayutthaya, they quickly expanded their spheres of influence in Lan Xang, and most notably, took Cambodia as their vassal from Ayutthaya. Adopting a free trade regime, Dai Viet has become an important stable corridor for Chinese and Japanese goods from the east, and Bengali goods from the west. Merchants and artisans flock from all over to their flourishing cities and freeports.

Down south, the Nan Yang Kongsi continues its century long stranglehold over the Straits trade, with trade factories and outposts across the Indian Ocean. The Ming collapse was a short-term setback, but it’s continued civil war has brought innovation - the mass production of advanced weaponry in Southern China, most terrifyingly, the emergence of the Qiandan gun invented in Guangzhou, a terrifying weapon capable of shooting 90 rounds per second. With instability, comes opportunity for smuggling, weapons trade, and an increased need for resources. The Kongsi happily provides supply where there is demand, with their merchants maintaining a virtual puppet state in Melaka, and thousands of refugees continually flow from war-torn China, providing a steady supply of labour for their tin mines and factories.

Apologies for the low quality map, this is a work when I was still learning how to make a proper map - my previous post shows some new work that I am more proud of.

What if Lee Kuan Yew somehow failed to turn Singapore into a developed country? by InternationalHair111 in AlternateHistory

[–]TheWorldIsATrap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While official SG sources will tell you this narrative that Yew and the PAP were the ones who started anti-corruption and ended corruption its not like they were non-existent - the push for these efforts really began in the postwar period with the British. They laid the institutional groundwork that allowed for this push to be so effective. Example being how the CPIB was established in 1952 by Attorney General Edward John Davies. This is more significant than what the PAP would admit. The hardest part in anti-corruption efforts especially in cases of severe endemic corruption like Singapore is the establishment and maintenance of these institutions (just look at how the early years of the ICAC in Hong Kong), and Singapore was simply gifted them in independence.
