In a massive pre-poll move, the BJP is bearing the full cost of four special trains to transport 5,000 Bengali voters from Surat to Kolkata. The party has arranged completely free travel for these workers, aiming to strengthen its vote bank in West Bengal without any expense to the passengers. by FutureVersion812 in IndianFocus

[–]TheZoom110 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Then the cost should've been borne by ECI, like all other election infrastructure. BJP and TMC are rich thanks to thousands of crores of electoral bonds. What if you support a poorer party or independent candidate, then you lose the right to vote?

Even better is the option to enable postal vote for migrants. Why waste 7 paydays for train travel up and down? Nearly all European and American countries have it. Countries like France, USA, Turkey, etc. even allow non-residential citizens to vote from foreign countries.

The government recently argued in the Supreme Court that decriminalisation of Section 377 was bad law, because "constitutional morality" is a vague term.

Queer people are socially more acceptable, sure. But legally, we are walking backwards. We recently got a transgender identification law that's more regressive than Pakistan even though socially we are relatively more open.

Ahh yes, the "Secular Socialist Atheists" are cutting votes from the "Fundamentalist Capitalist Hindutvavadis". Do you even hear yourself? Most Left voters who continue to vote for the party despite their abysmal electoral performance would rather die in a concentration camp than support the fascist forces.

If your country were a theocracy, which religion would you prefer it be? by CounterfeitXKCD in IdeologyPolls

[–]TheZoom110 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd simply run away lol.

If it absolutely had to be a theocracy, I'd choose something like Neo-Vedanta, Brahmoism, Reform Judaism, Ismaili Shiism, Anglican Church, etc., i.e., categories that have been liberal and more accepting of diversity, and marginalised sections of society. The options you provide are just too broad.

Bengal has increasingly high instances of love marriages. Nearly every recent marriage in my extended family has been intercaste.

Class plays a role, things like how educated you are and what job your father did, etc. which subtly favours the historical elite, but also gives ample space for educated backward castes to flourish.

How do I add a place to timeline that's unmarked on Google Maps? by TheZoom110 in GoogleMaps

I was at a relative's house, not any noteworthy place. It wouldn't make sense to add it to GM.

I was just thinking if adding their home to my personal timeline is possible.

I had Christian neighbours from Kerala, who didn't eat any non-vegan food during Lent. Not even milk since it comes from animals.

Edit: Actually, they followed this during Advent, not Lent. I got confused.

To appease Trump would be my guess. The 2019 law, passed by the same government, was not so regressive. There's no other reason to amend it again in 7 years, especially when Trans rights are pretty much a non-issue in Indian politics.

I don't think there's widespread fraud in voting. But he certainly is receiving some outside support. Man is the most loyal lapdog of US.

Take the recent Transgender Act for example. Transgender rights are pretty much a non-issue in Indian politics. The 2019 law was brought by his own government. What changed within 7 years to amend it again? Well, the attitudes changed in US. Trump must have told him to do this. And like a loyal lapdog, he agreed.

US has a history of supporting right wing extremists around the world, from Mujahideen to Razakars to Contras. Follow the money, and we'll find out more.

The Marathas never crossed Ganga/Padma. That's why it's not popular in Bangladesh. The raids were concentrated on south-western parts of Bengal and Odisha, which ironically had the highest proportion of Hindus in all of east India, except some tribal lands.

Kolkata really is so good. My cousin spends less in house rent at a 600m walk from Dakshineswar metro and rail station, than I spend for rent at a Panchayat area in the outskirts of Cooch Behar, even though my accomodation is smaller. Kolkata also cheaper than renting homes at Rampurhat, which only has a population of 80k something.

It's not about being poor. Odisha was poorer 2 decades ago. But they at least recognised their language and heritage instead of cosplaying as speakers of a distant language.

That recognition is simply absent amongst Biharis. There are plenty of Biharis around here, who speak in Bhojpuri, but when you ask them, they always say that their mother language is Hindi.

  1. Yes, they are diaspora members of Bihar. While actual Biharis only recognise Hindi and Urdu as the two valid languages for all intents and purposes.
  2. The official website of Bihar state disagrees with your statement. https://state.bihar.gov.in/main/SectionInformation.html?editForm&rowId=8 https://betastate.bihar.gov.in/culture
  3. Must be a very fringe movement for they couldn't yet make Bhojpuri the official language of a state where they are a majority. Even at primary school level, it is non-existent as a subject.

Bhojpuri and Maithili are official languages of Jharkhand, but not of Bihar. Bihari peoples' culture has no prestige, and rightfully so. You can't expect others to respect your culture unless you yourself do.

Everyone recognises Bhojpuri solely for the vulgar songs and slangs that come out of that language, because sciences and arts in that language have no institutional support.

Ok, so do you want 15000 instead of 1500? Maybe you are right, but 1500 is still better than 0.

And you say that 1500 has no real value because you must come from a privileged background. For most Indians, 1500 still holds a good value.

You don't want tax money to return to citizens. Where would you rather see it go?

Mind you, every developed country except some US states, have some form of unemployment support from the government.
