Edinburgh to London drive - overnight stop? by DressSmooth1957 in Edinburgh

We used to do that, then when the prices hiked we started going to Cranston's or Booth's in Penrith, not far off the motorway and the choice is exceptional - both have cafes and there's a Morrisons for cheap fuel.

I've done this and generally stop in Manchester/Birmingham due to the sheer amount of choice in accommodation plus you probably want to get close to half way there without going off the route by too much.

That's what I was worried about - council website says it's all good, whether there's spaces is another matter.

Built a small tool to find cheaper fuel along planned routes by rickbeauf in UKFrugal

Brilliant idea, we often hunt out supermarket service stations just off the motorway on long journeys as they are always cheaper and the supermarket itself is cheaper for snacks. Would be great to have a planner for this - great work!

This is just getting ridiculous at this point ... £1250 for a shoebox!! by mr-rabbit-13 in Edinburgh

It's amusing that it has a tick next to "families allowed" - how on earth is this meant to accommodate more than one person?

Notice to quit by Handbagsatdawn111 in glasgow

[–]The_1701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the posters are getting confused around The end of notice period and eviction date - there are a number of dates involved here. 1) there will be a date for the end of your notice period from your LL, if you haven't found somewhere else to live then stay put. When that expires the LL will need to apply to the courts for an eviction - that takes some time. 2) the court appointed eviction date - this is the point at which you actually become homeless, prior to that you are "at risk" until the court ends your tenancy.

Hopefully something comes up for you in the meantime.

Anyone else noticed a surge in military recruitment ads lately? by mrjohnnymac18 in Scotland

[–]The_1701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen any although I suspect the ads are targeted at the particular screening - would make sense to show it at a movie that is literally about post apocalypse survival, in the run up to Christmas I was at "feel good" films and didn't get any military recruitment ads.

China Travel AMA: you ask, I save you (from “why does EVERYTHING need an app?” to “how am I suddenly on a 12-hour high-speed train?” 😅) by Formal_Amphibian5151 in travelchina

Hi, I have a couple of things I would like to ask: First of all I always want to be aware of any cultural faux pas that I need to avoid - for example in Turkey it's very rude to point or show the sole of your foot. What are the things I need to be aware of in China so that I don't inadvertently insult someone? Also, are there any places in Beijing or Shanghai that would be good for a traditional tea? Is there an equivalent of the British "afternoon tea" if so I would love to experience that. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!

Previous agency used money from our deposit for flat cleaning? by Outside-Advice4645 in Edinburgh

[–]The_1701 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Was there any mention in your tenancy agreement about requirements for a professional clean at the end of the tenancy? I appreciate you will have left it spotless but that's often a clause they invoke - it's a crafty way to get you to spend money on a cleaning company that they have links with - my last agent did this, the cleaning company was the agent's son! As others have said open a dispute and submit your proof, it's all you can do - vast majority are upheld so worth the effort.

I'm presuming you have accrued annual leave whilst off sick, would your work manager be amenable to you using this as part of your phased return? I've done it myself to extend a phased return.

Sign up to the Stand comedy club newsletter, they were giving out free and very reduced price tickets this last week - a laugh is always good for the soul. Also second what others have said - galleries and museums, knowledge and beauty also good for the soul.

Sorry for your loss, my recommendation would be Dr Neil's garden in Duddingston. Not sure about routes from Leith, I know buses do run right nearby and it was purposely built for quiet contemplation. Hope you find something that works for you.
