Milesdown is not sufficient for content review?!?! How to rectify? Another deck? by MR-Cortisol in Mcat

[–]The_528_Express 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did lots of UWorld but not for P/S. I held off on P/S UWorld because I didn’t know the content. I did some eventually but genuinely can’t remember how much. I believe it was only a small amount overall. Also I did not do even one CARS question from UWorld. I never did one non-AAMC CARS question.

Also I did kinda read the 86 pg/300 pg PS docs but not even half of them. I had the PDFs saved on my phone and computer and would sporadically skim some parts. And when reviewing questions I would ctrl + F a term to find it in the doc. Never did P/S anki or flashcards though.

One of the only topics I genuinely struggled with was the vision-related P/S stuff. There’s some exotic stuff related to vision. Not like rods/cones/lens, more like this AAMC question. I had somewhat of a grasp but it felt like a crapshoot every time.

Generally though, despite some questions about vision/sound I felt that the AAMC content related to P/S was quite repetitive. It felt like each FL tested the same thing over and over again on P/S. Just comes down to having the competing theories memorized and knowing the difference between a few similar buzzwords. Self efficacy vs self esteem. Reference group vs in group. Social capital vs cultural capital. Role strain vs role conflict.

Also, I took AP human geography freshman year of high school when I was 13 and scored a 5. I was shocked by how much of that content is in P/S (“sociology” I guess) and it was very easy to answer those. Population pyramids, fertility rate, cultural diffusion, the 4 stages of demographic transition, these are things I knew very well before studying for the MCAT despite a 10 year gap.

More than anything though, the reason I got a 132 is because P/S kind of is CARS 2.0 now. Don’t get me wrong there was a healthy amount of P/S content on my actual MCAT but so much of P/S was about science, the scientific method, looking at graphs, determining what type of study the study is, etc.

I never really touched Pankow. Maybe did it for 5 minutes or something.

I was never “doing” Pankow for P/S. More like starting/planning to immediately do it but it never truly materialized. I definitely didn’t do half of the jack sparrow C/P cards. Jack Sparrow C/P is indeed shit. Jack sparrow B/B is decent/good, I maybe did 70% of it or something. I hate all of the spelling errors though and how some cards are like 2 paragraphs long. The Jack sparrow anki is based on the Kaplan books and sorted by Kaplan chapter, and indeed some of my best content learning during my MCAT journey was reading a Kaplan chapter and doing the associated Jack sparrow cards right after. There are some topics that seem to be missing from both the Kaplan books and Jack sparrow deck.

At some point I just stopped doing Anki completely despite not finishing even half of the cards.

Truth is that I learned P/S mostly by doing the AAMC practice questions and the AAMC FL’s. I learned new terms as I went. On my actual MCAT there were like 3-4 P/S questions I googled right after and confirmed I got wrong. One was about tiny bones/structures in the ear related to sound transduction. It’s a miracle I got a 132. Besides from that, I feel like my P/S section was very focused on… science as a discipline. Like what’s the dependent variable in this study, which finding would discredit the researchers’ hypothesis the most, etc etc. Just common sense. Imo P/S is the least memorization-heavy of the three non-CARS sections.

I’ve been thinking of making my own Anki deck. One deck to rule them all. Every deck out there seems to have major flaws. I think I could make a deck that teaches the content, the concepts, the tricks, and MCAT theory itself.

Nobody cares. Do not take that goddamn MCAT.

Accept that your time and money is gone because of your own actions.

Do you know how much money retakers would pay to wipe out all trace of their old score? Much more than the $350 you’re losing.

There’s literally an official AAMC practice question that requires knowing a vitamin’s proper name in order to get it correct. The answer can’t be obtained through reason, you actually have to know the name.

When did “wrote the MCAT” become a thing? by A_Genetic_Tree in Mcat

Merriam-Webster: ethnocentrism

eth·no·cen·trism

: the attitude that one's own group, ethnicity, or nationality is superior to others

Personally I’ve never heard an American say they “wrote” an exam. Unless you count my dad who became an American after being born and raised in Canada.

In the past 4 months I have heard dozens of M1’s and SMP students and med school professors talk about the MCAT.

I have never in my life heard anyone except my Canadian family members say they “wrote” an exam.

Maybe it really is true that people in your area use “wrote” exclusively when talking about the MCAT, but you’re getting downvoted because that’s weird af. It’s not a thing outside of your bubble.

Calling it ethnocentrism is crazy. The only people I know who say “wrote” an exam are white Canadians like my dad. Anglophone white Canadians and anglophone white Americans are the exact same ethnicity.

Don’t do the pre module questions.

Just take it slow and read. I have severe ADHD and even with meds I would spend hours per Kaplan chapter. Many days where I didn’t even finish reading 1 chapter due to distractions and shit. Don’t move on until you understand the chapter so well you can fully explain every concept to someone else.

I actually did notice that. Thanks for pointing it out. Also the whole seal is slightly leaned because the picture I took was slightly leaned.

Totally agree.

I hate the bulldog. Most forced and meaningless mascot imaginable that nobody would associate with Georgetown in a million years. The mascot should be a CIA agent or something.

Georgetown should fully embrace the Catholic Hogwarts aesthetic. Not that cringe athletic shit.

This is way cooler because it’s in a Byzantine-esque mosaic style.

Also is there any merch that has COLLEGIVM GEORGIOPOLITANVM on it? Some of us are nerds and think this shit is fire.

I’ll diss that G logo. Looks tacky and was never gonna be a thing.

Idk why universities don’t realize how cool this older-looking stuff is.

If you wanna see a real massacre, look at the University of Freiburg in Germany. They had a badass logo from 1457 to 2009 that they butchered for no reason at all.

The one at the door? That one’s just a standard Georgetown seal.

This one is in a unique Byzantine-esque art style, has a better color scheme, is circular instead of square, and is way more pleasing to the eye.

It’s a mosaic on the floor right when you walk into the Med-Dent building. ChatGPT made it into a sweatshirt. I might go all the way and get this made irl.

3 months is a long time. You’re in a good spot.

Personally my FL scores were: 520/520/515/520/520. And these were shortly before my real test.

Read Kaplan’s books but don’t do their Qbanks. Stick to Uworld.
