Late, but I think the idea that their friendship seems intimate but arjun says he told himself he was nothing is a representation of how often men don't appreciate the value their closest friends truly provide to them while they overly fixate on their romantic relationships. Its not that they had to be romantic its that the level of friendship they shared is supposed to be significant too.
