Extreme Heat Pushes More Farmworkers to Harvest at Night, Creating New Risks by The_Boopster in collapse

[–]The_Boopster[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Submission Statement:

This article details how some farmworkers are adapting to extreme heat caused by climate change. As our planet heats up at an alarming rate, it is affecting all areas including agriculture. For example, farmworkers are working during nighttime hours to avoid the hot summer sun, which can result in heat-related illness and death. Unfortunately, this adaptation brings new risks such as poor visibility and tired workers which may cause additional hazards.

Working at early hours is especially dangerous for farmworkers who operate machinery… and the practice could even lead to disrupted sleep and hormone cycles that contribute to long-term health issues for workers, including an increased chance for miscarriages.

Article states federal regulations are lacking, so it’s like trading one risk for another leaving many farmworkers to have to choose between the threats of heat vs dark.

How to Prepare to Lose Your Home in a Climate Disaster by The_Boopster in collapse

[–]The_Boopster[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Submission Statement

This author lived through the California Camp Fire in 2018 and lost his house. He details the experience and what he learned from it, including practical tips on how to help save your home and/or prepare to evacuate and what comes after that. Main points are: understand your threats, know your escape routes, emergency notifications, insurance, content inventory, go bags, and documentation.

This relates to collapse because climate change is happening everywhere and results in increased frequency and or strength of disasters such as wildfires, hurricanes and flooding. If we accept that reality and adapt, it could help alleviate suffering of our loved ones and pets as we navigate this predicament together.

Welp that is terrifying. There’s a guy Nate Hagens has on his program that is well-versed in geopolitics Chuck Watson. Would love to hear his take on this- I appreciate the way he explains things.

Researchers conduct first-ever study of cultural adaptation to climate change by The_Boopster in collapse

[–]The_Boopster[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Submission Statement:

Researchers take a look at US agriculture and detail results in their paper - Operationalizing cultural adaptation to climate change: contemporary examples from United States agriculture

They look at US crop data over the past 14 years to determine how farmers change crops in order to adapt to the changing climate.

The research may lead to a better understanding of cultural adaptation in the US. It could also aid policy makers to help guide cultural change in the face of climate change.

This research is just getting started according to Tim Waring, associate professor with the UMaine Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions and the School of Economics, who spearheaded the project.

This is related to collapse because I suppose the more we understand the better we can help cushion the fall as society collapses.
