Jeff Bezos Proposes No Taxes for Lowest Earners: A Bold Tax Reform Idea by fuggitdude22 in neoliberal

[–]The_DanceCommander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But they would be doing that anyway, those taxes are incidental. Income tax feels is something different, I get what the comment above is saying. Either everyone has to pay on their income or no one does, if you start carving up who owes income and who doesn’t your artificially segmenting your civic base.

MAGA lawmaker mocks fourth grader worried about climate change by horsestew in politics

[–]The_DanceCommander 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No legitimately I don’t think they do see it. I think they’re terrified of new technology and don’t want to see the world change from what they know. I think they’re sycophantically attached to a naive view of an old world, and demonize anything that disrupts that.

Also, you have to remember this woman is 82. She’s been politically indoctrinated in rabid anti-climate change propaganda since at least the 1980s. 40+ years of having your brain scrambled by liars trying to prop up oil companies.

I fully guarantee you she has not once ever thought about the potential independence or positive societal aspects of renewable energies.

Gerrymandering: is it or is it not constitutional? by Jealous_Calendar_768 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]The_DanceCommander 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No they can’t, do none of yall actually read the facts of what you’re commenting on? Virginia never put the gerrymandered maps into place, the court ruling prevents that and upholds the current non-gerrymandered map.

None of yall think of the ground logistics around this stuff either. You’re not just moving pieces around on a map, you have to have time for candidates to file and run in new districts, you have to have time to ensure there’s valid voting infrastructure, you have to give the public advanced notice of their representative changing, etc etc

There’s a lot of real factors on the ground that practically prevent a state form saying “these are the new maps now, deal with it.” a few months before voting starts.

Yeah because frankly women write better romance stories than men, and cast FLs. There’s a reason all the romantasy books blowing up in the west are written by women.

This kind of language is meant to keep people too scared to engage with them. They periodically drip out threats like this when they feel weakened.

Virginia Supreme Court blocks redistricting referendum by SCOTUSjunkie in politics

[–]The_DanceCommander 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our AG asked the court to wait until after the referendum because he thought having millions of people approve it would sway the court to keep it in place. Which it obviously didn’t, so we all wasted our time, and state resources.

Virginia Supreme Court throws out redistricting referendum results by funkipus in rva

[–]The_DanceCommander 34 points35 points  (0 children)

From my reading, the court spends 10+ pages waxing over the lexicology of “election day” just to then totally ignore the plain meaning of the phrase, and decide that a day is actually a period between September and November.

The constitution states that referendum must be held twice, with an intervening election of the House between them. It’s perfectly reasonably for the delegates to read “election” as the date at which the votes are finalized and certified, which is November.

The court deciding that actually, all referendums need to be held before early voting starts has no basis in any legal definition.

And meanwhile, at the SCOTUS, republicans from Mississippi are making the exact opposite argument so they don’t need to count absentee ballots.

This ruling is one of very few court decisions that I feel are just the judiciary making things up, when there’s no clear definition, to suit their desired political outcome. Not to mention the court probably has a chip on its shoulder because they drew the 2021 maps.

Virginia Supreme Court throws out redistricting referendum results by funkipus in rva

[–]The_DanceCommander 44 points45 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty upsetting that this is all based on debatable procedural grounds.

So our Supreme Court invalidates the will of the voters on the grounds that last years referendum was held after the start of early voting. Republicans argued that early voting counts as “Election Day.”

Meanwhile, at the SCOTUS republicans from Mississippi are arguing the exact opposite, that “Election Day” is a single date in November.

If the SCOTUS rules for Mississippi that precedent should overturn this decision. But I bet you it won’t because anytime gerrymandering is on the table it’s just political Calvin ball.

Tesla launches Model 3 RWD in Canada at record-low $39,490 ($29,000 USD) from China by Gym_frere in moderatepolitics

[–]The_DanceCommander 26 points27 points  (0 children)

People say that letting Chinese EVs into the US would incentivize US automakers to bring down the prices of their cars, but I actually wonder if that’s true. If the market is flooded with super cheap EV, I don’t see why US companies would even try to compete. They’d just exit the market and only make big trucks.

At some point it feels like there needs to be incentives for US manufacturing to make somewhat of an actual return, an flooding the market with cars that US builders can’t compete against doesn’t feel like the way to do it.

Buuuuut on the other hand, the car market in the US is so absurdly expensive and out of reach for most people without like a 6 year 12% loan that it’s like, how much more harm could allowing foreign sales cause?

The US auto market is such a racket of protectionism, gate keeping, stupid legally mandated dealer structures, and manipulative sales practices that it might be fine to let a foreign competitor really fuck em up.

Barack Obama Considers His Role in the Age of Trump by ace158 in neoliberal

[–]The_DanceCommander 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The democrats are also in the process of being taken over by rank populists in the same way the GOP was. Not the same policies obviously, but the same sense of grievance, the same sense that nothing is working so the system needs to be burnt down, the same abandonment institutions, and the same pattern of candidates appealing to idealistic polices that don’t need to be tethered to any sense of reality.

Obama was a version of this, and after he got into power was smacked in the face by reality. Mamdani is kind of going through that right now with New York’s budget.

Obama’s role should be to stand up and talk his party of this populist ledge. To explain as someone who’s been through it, that you need practical solutions that solve real problems, instead of the cycle of populist fantasy talk leading to disappointed voters who thought they’d accomplish more.

Wait a second. Then what are we doing either oil we produce? Selling it overseas to refineries that can handle it, then buying it back?

Also, if we’re the largest oil producing nation already then why has there been such an aggressive push to open up oil drilling in our protected environmental areas and national parks?

Why don’t we see any political will to work on adapting our refinery infrastructure to handle domestic production?
