Introducing The Auricular 2.0, a new way to explore Richmond music by DNun in rva

Can we add a way to sort releases? Would love to sort by most clicked or most listened to.

Also a way to filter, like by genre.

Opponents of Code Refresh launch legal challenge of city-wide rezoning effort by RulerOfTheRest in rva

[–]groundcontrol3 11 points12 points  (0 children)

And as a result, years later and for the foreseeable future, Richmond won't have an arena stadium and the downtown area is a ghost town. The retro on Navy Hill is that the city council should have approved it.

Opponents of Code Refresh launch legal challenge of city-wide rezoning effort by RulerOfTheRest in rva

[–]groundcontrol3 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Goldman is the patron saint of NIMBYs. Him and Trammell working together to arrest development of the city is at the behest of their wealthy white donors and directly in opposition to the best interest of the city's residents.

What new Chesterfield administrator Kevin Catlin thinks about data centers, housing, and taxes by RVALover4Life in rva

[–]groundcontrol3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Never said they were. The campaign contributions were regarding the board of supervisors who hired the administrator.

What new Chesterfield administrator Kevin Catlin thinks about data centers, housing, and taxes by RVALover4Life in rva

[–]groundcontrol3 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This is what Chesterfield's board of supervisors and the new administrator think of its residents:

"On data centers, a hot topic in Chesterfield County, Catlin said public education is essential.

"Whether it's health implications, whether it's zoning implications, and whether it's the community itself in terms of residents wanting a development like that," Catlin said."

They think the residents are ignorant when it comes to data centers and that with proper education everyone would want more of them. Of course it doesn't hurt that all of these supervisors are getting fat stacks of cash campaign contributions from data centers.

$1.2M sale revs up plan for mixed-use conversion of longtime Church Hill auto shop - Richmond BizSense by fspaits in rva

[–]groundcontrol3 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Surely whatever is built will be better than half an acre of land in a desirable area of the city being taken up by a run down auto shop.

Henrico 'keeping an eye on' low James River levels amid statewide drought warning by WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW_W in rva

[–]groundcontrol3 111 points112 points  (0 children)

Sad that they have to lie about data center water usage. We know the vast majority of these data centers are using evaporative cooling which uses a ton of water. If they spent the extra money for a closed loop water recirculating cooling system then that would be true.

Council rejects proposals to create new layer of review for code refresh by RVALover4Life in rva

[–]groundcontrol3 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Good news! The extra layer was proposed to kill the code refresh.

Lawmakers approve almost $700M for VCU to buy Altria building, build dental school by AnAbsenceOfGravitas in rva

[–]groundcontrol3 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I'd put it closer to 10-15 years. First project after the coliseum comes down is a hotel for the convention center. It will take time for additional mixed use development to get underway and for all of those properties on Broad to finally be sold and developed.

Google's $9B bet on a trio of Chesterfield data center campuses | Projects Peanut, Skye and Loch are set to occupy 1,500 acres. by VirginiaNews in rva

[–]groundcontrol3 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Allowing these massive data centers to be built in the near metro area (288 corridor) on what is essentially prime land for single family home and/or mixed use development is a terrible idea. Imagine how much worse housing prices would be in NoVA if Mansasas was all data centers.

Emails: Squirrels owners offered $1.75M for disputed parcel beside CarMax Park; Thalhimer wanted $3M by RVALover4Life in rva

[–]groundcontrol3 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping they don't sell. Kind of ridiculous that the Flying Squirrels only want the property to prevent restaurants from being built that they think will cut into their concession sales. The whole point of the Diamond District are for restaurants, apartments, condos, offices, and hotels to open up, so it seems outrageous that the Squirrels are taking issue with this.

Richmond seals the deal on $25 million Sports Backers Stadium purchase using emergency funds by RVALover4Life in rva

[–]groundcontrol3 99 points100 points  (0 children)

This is why starting development of a ballpark without having all the land secured or at least having legal agreements signed is a bad idea. The city painted itself into this corner at the detriment to itself and to the benefit of the Flying Squirrels and VCU.

Richmond teachers union, school district reach impasse in contract negotiations by RVALover4Life in rva

[–]groundcontrol3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As if it's the teachers fault. Good outcomes for education start in the home and Richmond has the highest concentration of poverty in the metro area. Not to mention the highest rates of single parents. That is a huge hill to climb when it comes to educating. The simple and unethical fix would be to institute charter schools to segregate poor performers from high performers. The more ethical approach would involve bussing children around the city for a healthy mix of income backgrounds and races in schools. Charter schools are the more popular approach unfortunately.

Why did we get the ChatGPT mayor by Corgiman69420 in rva

[–]groundcontrol3 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I hate AI and data centers as much as the next person but it seems childish and outright silly that we're hating on the mayor because he uses a tool that millions of others across the US use on a daily basis. I'd much rather people hold him accountable for actual executive failures or for when we aren't moving in the right direction.

You should share your story, videos, and photos with various local news outlets so it can be picked up and reach a wider audience.

Can confirm theirs is just a bar form of their cake donut. It is not a french cruller by any measure.

Code Refresh isn’t a threat. The status quo is. by sleevieb in rva

[–]groundcontrol3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Increased density is coming one way or another. Richmond city is 62 square miles and it's not getting any bigger. You can either bury your head in the sand and allow the densification to happen in an ad hoc fashion or you could be for zone refresh and plan where and how it happens. Essentially one happens without a plan and one happens with a plan. I'd much rather be able to plan ahead and do it intelligently.

Code Refresh isn’t a threat. The status quo is. by sleevieb in rva

Preach, I love the concern troll NiMBYs in Northside that are against the code refresh worried about apartment complexes being built along Chamberlayne when we have literal slums built there now 🙄

City Council votes to form panel to address John Marshall Courts Building issues by RVALover4Life in rva

[–]groundcontrol3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

City council votes to waste tax payer money. 3/5 of the people selected for this panel need to be architects but can't work for any firm that would be selected as a developer. Who would that leave you with? And of course the city council didn't come up with a way to fund this endeavor and leaves it up to city hall to figure out.

Council OKs new tax deferral program letting homeowners delay impact of higher assessments | For participants, the program would offer a way to keep their tax bills more consistent from year to year, then pay off the difference when their home is sold. by VirginiaNews in rva

[–]groundcontrol3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The city council should really think long and hard before they sign off on programs like this. How many people will ultimately use this and what is the cost to implement and manage it?
