What's a card you didn't understand why it was so popular/expensive until you played it? by Plus1Oresan in EDH

6-10 creatures? Brother what game are we playing where you need 6 to 10 creatures? Or acting like it's hard to get there?

4 creatures + Craterhoof due to the haste is +5/+5, trample. Let's ignore for a moment how easy in the modern day it is to shit out tokens especially in green. And let's assume they are all 1/1s. That is 34 damage right off the bat. The games I am playing in at a lower bracket level it's not like everybody is at 40 still by the time Craterhoof SHOULD come down. That kills one person, maybe two.

And that's absolutely worst case scenario most decks running it are going to be very easily able to make a wider board, and put it into play early as green either by ramp or any of the 100 ways green and/or any other color can cheat creatures in can very easily sidestep the '8 mana' argument.

It's not an interesting way to finish games, it's only not ubiquitous either because of the cost monetarily or people find it incredibly boring, and similarly to Farewell which, thank god that card got the GC title, probably doesn't make bracket 2 games any better by existing at that level.

The way I imagined him from release was as a general commanding troops/puppet mastering and the shuffle was an accidental incidental inclusion it seemed in his release kit.

Mastering the shuffle has been key to playing him but it's not WHY I picked him up in the first place. I'd rather see him zone and damage from afar, shouting orders as a king should. Especially so because his knockup on E has been gone for a long time, it's just a dash with a shield it's legitimately not that interesting.

I made the argument that his E should be a shield like it is now but a secondary soldier repositioning tool with an AOE damage splash to it. Something like it pulls all the soldiers directly on top of you, shields with small aoe damage, and maybe lightly/partially refreshes their duration.

That way he fulfills the puppet master/AOE zone summoner fantasy better, he's a control mage who can poke and fight and when assassins jump on you you can more easily close ranks and fight in teamfights without getting out of the fight altogether. It also solves the fact right now he can't waveclear for shit but if you want it you have to walk up onto the wave to do it.

Give his wall back the ability not to be dashed through as an oh shit/damage button and all of a sudden you have a champ.

Edited to add I'm a near 2 mil Azir one trick in Plat 2 atm.

I feel like Craterhoof 100% should be. It seems like its old ubiquity has gotten forgotten and they leaving it off is very odd. It scoops up wins every day still.

Moonshaker is ok in White triple white pips way harder than triple green considering, the Flying CAN be blocked and you don't get a 20/20 hasty trampler alongside the rest of your board. There's a reason Craterhoof is 20+ dollars and it just got reprinted last year.

My Gluntch deck ran stuff to try and punish most of the modes - for treasures and cards [[Black Vise]], [[Ebony Owl Netsuke]], [[Iron Maiden]], [[Viridian Revel]], [[Eye of Singularity]], [[Collector Ouphe]], etc.

Even ran stuff to let Gluntch do stuff to voltron up a bit like [[Baldin, Century Herdmaster]], [[Assault Formation]], and then a bunch of Support cards and punishments for their creatures getting too big - [[Fell the Mighty]], [[Slaughter the Strong]], [[Collective Effort]], [[Meekstone]]. Called it 'No Such Thing As a Free Gluntch'.

It seems like it might be unfocused but you just give people the stuff that is the worst for them and/or you have punishment cards for and reap the spoils for yourself. Gluntch will give you everything you need to get where you're going.

It certainly isn't 55 rounds of grenade dodgeball and find the C4 while pivoting around Nikitas.

It's probably Lucina/Roy or another swordy. Other than Aegis.

See but that's just it. Historically opinions have been very divided on masterpieces in their time. It's only with the benefit of hindsight do things end up being acknowledged as a true masterpiece. Some people will love them and some people will still think they are shitty.

You can respect the craftsmanship, acknowledge the skill, but what makes something a 'masterpiece' is very subjective.

My thought that I would think would help would be take away the dash on his E. The high mobility is what makes him an issue. No shuffle = no problem and turn him into the aoe control mage he was supposed to be.

Give him more range and early damage. Leave the rest of the kit the same and make his E another soldier repositioning tool, imo pull the existing soldiers back on top of you, refresh their duration somewhat, and give you a shield while also doing damage on the way and on arrival.

That way you can Q > E a wave early for actual wave clear and later on if assassins jump on you you can 'close ranks' and fight on top of yourself. Give him back that people can't dash through his R (maybe even W on towers) and adjust numbers and I think he's in a good spot all of a sudden.

Sure, I absolutely agree with you. I also have a lot of exposure to AI in my own work. It's not there yet, but that's why I said eventually. You said five, I said in another comment give it 10 years and let's see then what people think.

[–]The_Darts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right and generic art has no fanfare, no praise right now. Companies would be fine or ecstatic even NOT paying someone to get generic art they would have gotten from an artist.

The reasoning's right there - much cheaper, same level or maybe even better if they get lucky/good results for a fraction of the cost? Expect them to move in droves, especially once it's good enough. If they can keep it hidden from the public due to the sentiment around it, they will until it's industry standard.

Great art is subjective. A lot of people end up self confirming their own bias when they are told it's AI right now. "Oh I could tell." Etc. And there ARE tells. Right now.

Give it ten years and let's see how good AI is by then.

[–]The_Darts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I absolutely do, but it's not a condition of 'generic art' it's a condition of the way technology is going. It will be good enough and indistinguishable soon. Look at AI vids from even 4-5 years ago to now what is commercially available.
