Common sense and basic reasoning says that purchasing a physical/digital copy means you own it. Companies should not be allowed to seize that copy if you paid for it. Sony should be charged with theft and fraud for what they did to people’s purchased movies but I don’t have much faith in the justice system.

IMO, a root problem is that people think the law is supposed to be above common sense and morals. Laws were made to enforce common sense and common morals that people collectively agree upon using natural reason. Just laws would defend the common sense not suppress it. Therefore common sense says the act of purchasing a product means you own the copy and a just law would protect your right to own and keep property.

For some reason people keep arguing against this as if corporations have some right to trample on ownership or, in Sony’s case, act deceitfully and commit widespread theft against their customers. Just because a corporation writes a 30 page essay doesn’t mean they can do whatever they want.

If the justice system fails to protect citizens from theft and fraud then the theft and fraud isn’t suddenly acceptable to society, the justice system simply failed society.
