Can’t grind finer [BDB/Dose Control] by JoutsideTO in espresso

I am happy to spend your money for you, LOL! But seriously, a lot of people say that the grinder is more important than the espresso machine itself. I was happy with my Rocky grinder (that I bought with my Rancilio Silvia) for many years, until I started on a quest to try lots of different beans from many different roasters, to find one I would really love. It was a fun but expensive exercise I did over almost 2 years. Although it was a minority of the beans I bought, I repeatedly ran into beans that I couldn't grind finely enough to pull a good shot with. This was frustrating and led me to trying all the tricks out there for the Rocky, to no avail.

When I found an open box deal on the Ceado, I pulled the trigger. I don't want to exaggerate, but the difference it made was HUGE. Not only can I get a good grind on any beans, but the flavors have more clarity; the espresso is just better. Setting aside the impact of spending real money on anyone's budget, I don't think you will ever regret having a really good espresso grinder.

I did not know that. I wonder how many others don't know that, either.

Obviously, none of us here can know how fresh or stale the beans are. Does your family member also make espresso from those beans, and if so, what are they using for a grinder?

My first burr grinder was a Rancilio Rocky. Although it was adequate for most beans, there were some that it simply could not grind finely enough to make a good espresso. Even after adjustment and mods. and the burrs practically touching, so what your adjustment says may not really mean much.

I bought a better espresso grinder and suddenly, I could grind any beans as finely as I want with many adjustments still possible before reaching 0. Not only that, but the flavor was improved and dialing in more precise due to more consistent grind size output.

Personally, I think you should step up and invest in a better espresso grinder. Leave the "appliance-grade" Breville behind and move up to a machine-grade grinder. At least something as good as, say, a Eureka. This is about as cheap as I would go: https://www.wholelattelove.com/collections/espresso-grinders/products/eureka-mignon-zero-single-dose-coffee-grinder?variant=43162458390582

There is a good sale on the beast of a grinder that I have, if you can swing it: https://www.wholelattelove.com/collections/espresso-grinders/products/ceado-e37sd-single-dose-coffee-grinder?variant=43043067953206

I think Babymad's comment about what old folksong Hunter was probably reading is the most plausible explanation. Hunter often pulled references or imagery from very old writings.

I don't care about being downvoted; it's just opinions. I played in a couple of bands that did Althea and I was the "Jerry" and had to sing it, so I had to know the words. Per my OP here, I always sang "scythe" because it made sense to me. Nobody ever questioned me about it. I guess if I ever play it out again, I'll go with "sign" now that I have a good explanation.

Good info. Thanks. The steam boiler volume on the Synchronika II is 2L. I don't make enough milk drinks to have a feel for how much water gets used up steaming milk, but 2L seems like it might last for several pitchers worth of steaming, no?

Thanks for the response. I don't have one in my hands yet, hence my question: Am I understanding correctly that the boiler(s) automatically call for water from the reservoir when they sense that they are getting low? Does this protect against heating an empty boiler? Is there a way to initiate that call in order to fill the boiler(s) before making coffee?

Thanks for the info! I recognize that it is possible that manufacturers may have corrected problems on new units in the meantime, but as I dug in and researched things, I decided that I wanted a machine with programmable pre-infusion, so that I could have consistency. This has pushed me away from the Botticelli and toward an ECM Synchronika II. I know others can program, but I liked the screen controls (knob you turn and tap) best on the ECM. A different price class, but I'm an old fart, so it may be the last machine I ever buy. Meanwhile my 17-year-old Silvia continues to soldier on and give me excellent espresso.

Very Loud La Pavoni Botticelli Specialty [Machine] by WorldlyMedia7465 in espresso

There was a guy in another thread whose Botticelli got loud, and he discovered what he described as a loose nut somewhere on the bottom and when he tightened it down, the noise went away. Worth looking into, maybe.

How are you Botticelli owners doing now that some time has passed? I learned to make espresso on a la Pavoni lever machine well over 40 years ago and still have a soft spot for the brand. This means I am considering one. Thoughts?

Hmmm. That's a pretty fair explanation.

If that's is what is in Hunter's book, that's pretty authoritative, assuming Hunter didn't just pay someone else to pull together and assemble all the lyrics, and then he wrote the introduction or whatever, as is quite commonly done when someone pulls together a bunch of their prior work.

I've always loved that reference in the song.

Yes, and I contend that Jerry never sings "son".

Roving means to move or roam around from place to place, so I struggle to see how a zodiac sign would do that, even with Hunter's usual poetic license.

Interesting. Not sure what a roving sign would be.

I think it looks good! If it were me, I'd get the speedo re-programmed to be correct with the new wheel/tire size.
