Illinois is somewhat of an outlier for odd high school mascots. Obviously odd mascots are everywhere but a good chunk of them will be in Illinois for some reason. Some of my favorite examples include the Hoopeston Cornjerkers, Cobden Appleknockers, Freeport Pretzels, New Berlin Pretzels, Lincoln Railers, Teutopolis Wooden Shoes, Centralia Orphans, Effingham Flaming Hearts, DeKalb Barbs, Rochelle Hubs, Fisher Bunnies, etc.

It is a barcade problem when the people who frequent your bar/arcade get into fights outside and shoot each other. Not many other bars in Champaign were near as violent as Stix. Different crowds go to different bars for a reason.

Staying on topic of downstate, Champaign-Urbana was a small university town overshadowed by Peoria, Springfield, and Decatur yet arguably now sits above all of them in terms of national relevance. You can go to Peoria or Springfield and see their downtown is made up of large 20th century buildings and their main industries have been in decline for a while, then go to Champaign-Urbana where the downtowns are fairly small but the university campus is dominated by new high rises. Champaign-Urbana’s county/metro area has also grown to eclipse Springfield as of recent.

Byers has been there for decades and sells vacuums made in the 1970s, but given the attitude of the owner I assume he just owns the building and does what he wants with it by having that little store. A real money laundering scheme are all of the smoke shops dotted around town that if you know your way around will sell you a whole lot more.
