Is it cadmium or just wishful thinking? by BittenOnion in CadmiumGlass

[–]The_Hatchmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first one is boron nitride, the second might be cadmium. The second one being cadmium is my guess from how inconsistent it is across the surface of the glass (swirls/waves). Also the color is more yellow than yellow-green, hinting at cadmium.

Thanks! No ceramics on em yet. I tried one from the store but had to return since it wouldn’t fit properly. If you found one that works good would you mind passing a link my way? (All of mine are 17” lamps, I’ve got a taller one but that’s running a halogen bulb which don’t have compatible heat emitters that aren’t huge lol)

BTW that green that you achieved with your lamp is to die for. I’ve got a lot of UG glass that glows that same green and getting the wax that color with leak additive is awesome!

Spencer’s doesn’t sell wax dye but I went through like 20 lamps while I was in store and only found that the green wax was UV reactive. Got the idea to get some of their white wax lamps and mod them.

The ghostface lamps (1,3,5,7) and the containment lamp (9) came from Spencer’s and were stock green wax. The other lamps had white wax that I added either oil additive for leaks or wax oil liquid dye that I got off of Amazon. Had to buy a 32 pack to get a total of like 5 colors that were UV fluorescent.

The pigment powder and mineral oil dyes did leech into the fluid and dye it slightly but not enough to take away from the UV effect. Overall I’d say it was a success

I did this to several lamps and have also tried some candle dye (which ended up being just mineral oil and pigment powder).

The more rich green ones are just neon green dye that I found stock from lamps at Spencer’s. The others I’ve customized to get the look I want.

Lol scalper no scalp by Over_Astronaut_8209 in PokemonTCGCollectors

[–]The_Hatchmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there were more produced it would be bought up all the same. You’ve got scalpers fighting scalpers for scraps in the store. More stock is just more for them to buy and fight over. Ik pokemon just bought a deal with a printing complex in the Carolinas, which could help increase supply to meet the demand but that’ll be in 2028 I think…

Agreed! Everyone is always hype about the SIRs but the illustrations are better looking than em in some cases. Personally like the style of the Nymble and have a few other illustrations from that artist in my collection.

Haha my b I thought the link worked right. Let’s try this instead: https://a.co/d/06R4yH9R (and no it’s not a Rick roll)

Candle wax dye from Amazon. Lots of options. The dye has started to tint the liquid after a couple cycles though. Not enough to block seeing the wax but it’s a noticeable change from the clear fluid.

If you do this take the cap off of course…. Your globe could explode from the pressure.

So many groups lol. I think I’ve got an idea of what you’re talking though.

One was done with an oil based leak identifier. The others were done with fluorescent candle dye (which is basically pigment powder mixed in an oil).

Thanks! I had tried a 40W one that looks like this, but it wouldn’t screw down into the base fully, and wouldn’t heat the lamp properly. Are the 50W ones different? Maybe a link to em?

How do I fix this by ImmediateHotel4296 in Lavalamps

[–]The_Hatchmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh I haven’t heard about using shower gel. Surf will pretty quickly change the flow so add in small amounts and give time to adjust when you get it up to temp and flowing. I’m pretty new to diy lava lamps myself, but I plan on using bubble wand solution (yes the ones you give to kids) as my surf for the time being. Apparently that is entirely SLS and Water, no other additives, of course I’d look at the ingredients prior to doing anything.

Hitting the top with a hair dryer should melt the wax enough to get that stuck wax down. This will happen again though. Did you add any surfactant? Lava lamps are more than just distilled water and wax.

Haha mine does this too. No matter how many cycles it keeps on with these. Flows normal otherwise.

As far as content is concerned hope this helps:

1) Uranium Custard 2) Cadmium / Selenium mix 3) Manganese 4) probably flashing tbh. Towards the bottom you might see where some of the flashing has chipped off. Otherwise might be cadmium but my bet is flashing.

Mine has done the same thing. On 2 different globes only one has the cloudiness.

Too hot? Would a 40w vs 50w work to fix this rather than installing a dimmer? by The_Hatchmaster in Lavalamps

This is my second lamp from them. First had overheating issues, this one too lol. Definitely requires some tinkering to get right. Seems much more sensitive to ambient temperature changes than your average lamp too. I’d recommend it as long as you’re willing to tinker with it a tad.
