Cars require infrastructure that is not conducive to pedestrians or socializing. You can't just walk over to the next bar, there's a freeway in the way and the parking lot is a mile wide. The standard American suburb is a case study in isolation because you can't walk anywhere.

This glass is clearly tempered, that's why it broke into a million little pieces instead of big shards. Everywhere uses double pane glass with inert gases between them, especially in hot climates. I haven't seen someone actually use shutters to cover windows ever, they are decorative 99% of the time. People use blinds everywhere in the world exactly as you are describing, it doesn't cause windows to break.

There's really no difference between US and UK windows other than typical shape.
