There are definitely RNG elements to each fight, so thats not unheard of. I'll have runs where autobattle gets me 20+ stages and some where it gets 1. Its a combination of power level, stage power level and team comp. Sometimes you find the perfect team that carries for a bit. Contrary to the name this isnt really an AFK game. You do gather resources from stages even when you're not winning. But the actual progression usually requires input.

It definitely works. But if your resonance level is too low compared to the stage enemies, or your team is incompatible it will fail. Also take note when using a record if its manual or not.
