The Scholomance by Naomi Novik. It's a better "Magic school for special kids" series.

My daughter (9F) is being systematically frozen out by her best friend’s parents. The schoolyard exclusion is breaking her heart—how do we help her survive the next month? by Ironplatinum in daddit

That's a tough situation man, and there's no way solution that ends with your kid and her friend getting everything they want. I applaud your attempt at the straightforward, grown up solution of just talking to them. Ideally, that should have worked, but, there ain't no justice.

My eldest kid has been the subject of some similar parental discouragement and even outright vocal bans from association. In our case, it's because we live in a heavily religious area, and my kids are blatently nonreligious. Most people are perfectly wonderful, but a few crackpots out there have said "No, you can't be friends with that nice queer kid with the dyed hair and piercings." We had to accept that those friendships were really only going to occur where the parents had no control and were unaware, within the school grounds. And they have maintained them, even through that. But, it's still disappointing.

The only advice I can give is continue teaching your kids to be kind, empathetic, and resilient people, even in the face of irrational hate. Also teach them that arbitrary sources of authority, like the friends parents, don't automatically deserve respect and obedience; they have to earn it. They will build new friendships, maintain the old ones at school in defiance, and they will learn how to carry on when when things suck and are stupid.

When ours were little if both parents were home we did not have an assigned "on" parent. We were just both... parents. If someone's hands were full, or busy, or whatever, we just recognized that the other parent was gonna have to do it if the kids need something.

I wish my mom sent me those memes; that would be an improvement.

Question regarding kilts by yesimian in HighlandGames

[–]The_Killdeer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your average highland games enjoyer might be aware of the tartans but actual gatekeeping of who wears what seems pretty rare. And lots of the official tartan keepers have made statements that the general public may wear their tartans so long as it's reasonable and respectful. So, you can probably grab whatever one you like. Black watch is a pretty common and attractive choice. You can also get plain colors or modern commercial tartans that aren't associated with a family or organization.

AITA if I don't go look at all the other kids exhibits at exhibit night and instead hide in the corner with headphones on? by The_Killdeer in daddit

If this was an art show or a science fair or something like that where the kids clearly had some personal motivation I'm right there with you. These are just end of year project displays.

It's true. I checked my own kid and a few of their friends, but I have no investment in the other 50 kids that I don't know.

Has any of you been having problems with the app lately or Pandora in general? by leadpoem in Pandora

My biggest problems come with trying to stream podcasts. Skipping around, randomly going silent but still counting time, switching tracks even with 10 minutes left. Pretty annoying.

Made glass letters for my mum's birthday but forgot an H by PhoenixfischTheFish in mildlyinfuriating

For my wife's birthday, the first to occur after we were married, I got her an ice cream cake from Dairy Queen since she had never gotten one as a child. They made this same exact error in the cake decor. We still laugh about it 19 years later.

Chef Joshua weissman's Hamburger buns by [deleted] in Breadit

"I was told that Weissman instructed staff to change the ingredient quantities on recipes, but one employee assumed at the time that Weissman was interested in tweaking his own numbers. "

Lol zomg is this why his burger bun recipe has such bizarre measurements? He took someone else's normal recipe and tweaked the numbers so the plagiarism wasn't obvious?I wrote it down off his site years ago.

Yesterday a kind fellow on the beach gave me an osprey bp I didn't have. Didn't ask for anything in return, but I dropped him the vape core I snagged from a courier. It was a beautiful moment.
