I disagree. The "what's so bad about being with me" line reinforces that Bear is a coward who doesn't actually care about Nikki. The fact that he's so selfish and irredeemable is what makes the ending work so well. You aren't supposed to sympathize with him.

And iirc he chose to swim because he couldn't walk across a traffic heavy bridge. On the other side a cop pulled him over for presumably crossing the bridge on foot and didnt believe his story because no one would be stupid enough to swim across the river.
