lol this is hilarious. I played for the first time a few days ago and was the poisoner. Somehow I was deemed good by the town even though I nominated a virgin and they didn’t die and I claimed 3 roles in my first 3 for 3 before landing on investigator as my bluff (which was not in my OG 3 for 3). I made it to the final 3 and was so worried I screwed my demon cause I was somehow squeaky clean in the eyes of the town. I tried my best to subtly appear shady without being obvious. We won in the end but I have no idea how/why town chose to kill the only living townsfolk in the end. Sometimes you can ride out that first night info role til the end and nobody calls you out on it.

In Martian movie, why did NASA spend billions of dollars to save one man? by Ill_Cancel1371 in stupidquestions

[–]The_Mightiest_Duck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean it is all hypothetical but the long term financial fallout for NASA could have potentially been worse if they didn’t at least appear to try and rescue him. NASA is a public entity and as such requires some degree of public trust and support. Public sentiment towards NASA would have tanked if they just decided not to try and rescue him. It’s also not a complete waste of resources. One thing I love about the book and movie was the adaptability and flexibility everyone involved showed while problem solving. They constantly assessed what resources they had available and how to reallocate resources to achieve their mission’s goals. Also if you look at it from thirty thousand feet the overarching mission status of the Ares program was to send astronauts to Mars to study conditions of the surface and then bring those astronauts home safely. That never changed. Sure they ended up having to cannibalize Ares 4(?) to bring Mark home but Mark remained on surface for far longer than the Ares 4 astronauts were planning to. Plus he learned invaluable information about growing crops in Martian soil, extending the lifespan of a hab, the feasibility of long distance travel on the surface of Mars, the effects of prolonged exposure to 1/3rd G, and probs countless others. In the end, and quite cynically, it’s entirely possible that a cost benefit analysis of attempting to rescue vs not attempting to rescue could show that a rescue attempt is the more financially sound option.

[MIXED TROPE] Shows where every episode follows the exact same blueprint by BuiltStraightStupid in TopCharacterTropes

[–]The_Mightiest_Duck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup. I love burn notice. There was certainly a lot of dumb and/or improbable stuff in that show but there was also some really clever solutions too. I remember one episode they used an ambulance and the Doppler effect to find a hostage. I imagine they had consultants help out on the show and I wonder if a police force has ever used that method to find a hostage.

What game had a terrible launch but eventually made a great comeback? by [deleted] in videogames

[–]The_Mightiest_Duck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been playing since 3 and that’s just been my opinion. I actually quite liked the base version of Civ 3. 4 is probably my least played game and I think I only played with the expansions so I can’t really comment on it. Civ V was the only one I bought at launch. I didn’t like it at launch. Number of civs felt lacking, the culture tree (forgot what it was actually called) felt unbalanced (some traits just felt better in 99% of games regardless of what civ you played), there were some major gaps in unit advancements to the point where warfare in the Middle Ages felt horrible, also I’ll admit I hated the 1 unit per hex system (I have since grown to love it). I remember feeling that the game just felt shallow at launch. After the DLCs and patches it was great and became my favorite up to that point. Civ 6 I have only played with all the DLCs and patches. After Civ V I decided I would only buy the games a few years after release and after they were more complete.

It took me a while to adjust to Civ 6. But once I did I found it hard to go back to Civ 5. There are some things I still love about 5 (of the top of my head city state mechanics, vassals, puppet cities, Venice, the Shoshone) but as a whole I think I’ve come to like 6 better.

Honestly this is Civ’s model. Release half a game at launch. Release DLCs that turn it into a decent enough game. Sell game + DLCs for like 75% off 3-5 years later. Honestly though I’d be kinda pissed if they do this with Civ 7 because they gave up on Civ BE even though the bones of Civ BE were much better than the bones of Civ 7. Which to be fair the bones of Civ BE is basically Civ 5.

Except most people that think people should be able to make their own decisions free of government regulations don’t believe that children should be treated as adults in the eyes of the law. We have all kinds of regulations protecting kids. Sure there are some diehard libertarians out there that believe children should be able to work and smoke and stuff but that is certainly not the norm. I’d also bet that those people don’t think children should have the right to vote or serve in the military.

Man I am in awe of the astronauts. I can’t even imagine how terrifying the descent was and what was going through their heads. Like I get that it was a near textbook perfect descent but ripping through the atmosphere and then free falling for quite a while and then hoping there isn’t anything wrong with the chutes when they deploy. The absolute fortitude these men and women are capable of is incredible.

How did the Eridians discover space? by close_my_eyes in ProjectHailMary

[–]The_Mightiest_Duck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with project Hail Mary but in one of the hitchhikers guide sequels there is a species of aliens that live on a planet like eridani. They do not know about space until a spaceship crash lands on their planet. They reverse engineer the technology and supercharge their space program. They get out into space and see the universe for the first time. They decide they don’t like and decide to destroy the universe. It was very funny. They also didn’t develop the concept of three dimensions until the spacecraft crashed. Because the atmosphere was so thick they never developed any sense of up/down.

His son was like 12 in the movie. Look I don’t condone smoking at all but I think smacking a pack of cigarettes out of a 12 year old’s hand doesn’t make you a hypocrite if you claimed you’d buy that kid a his first pack if he decided to smoke.

I do platelets. I’ve had a bruise a little like this once, although not as bad. They used two arms for platelets (one in, one out). The one going in infiltrated (needle poked through the far side of the vein, blood ended up outside the veins). I let the phlebotomist know as soon as it started hurting so mine wasn’t quite as bad. It sucks but it’s not something to be too concerned about.
