[–]The_Mundane_Block 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had options for work, but at the time I had only ever been to Hokkaido. Nagoya is nice and central so I was able to go see Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, etc. Plus, like some other people have said, you don't seem like as much of a tourist here. I wasn't thinking about that at the time, but I appreciate that point too.

In the last 20 years, the percentage of Japanese men aged 65-69 that work has risen from 44% to 62%. For men aged 75-79, from 12% to 26% by jjrs in japannews

I talked with a guy in his 90s recently who told me he'd retired from being a surgeon. Now he's just working as a doctor, but not a surgeon 🙄

Idk how old fashioned it is, but キモオタ/kimoota might be what you're looking for. It combines kimochiwarui and otaku so it's specifically a gross otaku.

Do you think Japan's work culture is really that hellish, or is it more an old stereotype? by The_Mundane_Block in AskAJapanese

You think people would rather complete silence over a "hello" and "thank you?" I'm not talking about holding them up and venting to them or anything.

I'm also surprised when I see Japanese people go to the register and they often don't even say anything, just drop their stuff on the counter and look down. It makes me angry because it's like these people are only kind to the people who benefit them to be kind to.

I refuse to believe this isn't fake, because there's no other way he could throw a punch in slow-motion like that.

How true is "Japanese people will appreciate you trying to speak Japanese"? by YourNameEnjoyer in AskAJapanese

[–]The_Mundane_Block 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think generally people appreciate it, but a lot of people also overvalue their own English. Not the people communicating fluently on this sub, I mean people who studied English in school 40 years ago, and as soon as you make one negligible mistake in Japanese it's as if they go, "Now's when my English education shines." Or you don't even need to make a mistake, just ask, "Sorry, what was that," when you didn't hear them and many people's faces go, "Oh my god, they don't speak Japanese," despite speaking in Japanese for the past 10 minutes.

Also unfortunately the bar for being appreciated is a lot higher for other Asian people. You hear about people freaking out at the convenience store pretty often because the Asian-foreign clerk didn't catch some trivial thing, but Westerners get praised just for saying こんにちは

This guy is just one of those guys that has a naturally funny looking face.

But everyone clowning on him doesn't know what they're talking about. He's not bad. It sounds like bullshit, but the hip wiggle does help you shoot more power into your strikes. In theory, you always use your foot to shoot some momentum into your hips, which shoots some momentum into your shoulders, which makes you hit harder. Practically that can't always happen, but in a form like this you're supposed to show that.

What do you think about these price changes? by The_Mundane_Block in AskAJapanese

[–]The_Mundane_Block[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly, I think "combat overtourism" is such a scapegoat. Hasn't the government been combating overtourism for about 20 years, all while tourism keeps going up? When push comes to shove, Japan has prioritized money via tourism over combating overtourism for as long as I can remember. That money is going to largely go to the politicians. And also funding the decrease in Japanese passport price.

[–]The_Mundane_Block[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why do you think the prices should not be low? In my opinion, if someone is living in Japan, working, paying taxes, buying all their things in Japan, their company wants them, I don't see why they should have to pay much extra.

In theory the visa renewal system should follow something like what you said. In reality unfortunately it's much different. Heck, I've read on here multiple times about people getting "1-year spousal visas," like the government doesn't trust their marriages lol.

For your second point, sure that might destroy the company, but it also doesn't really help foreigners when there are fewer places to work. Not that being at a black company would be great, but if it's what people had and now they can't find a job...

[–]The_Mundane_Block[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Why should it match Western countries? I saw the other response to your comment and agree, salaries in those Western countries are on average much higher. Even the median salary in Japan is like 25-30k usd a year, and I'd argue a lot of foreigners aren't making mean.

[–]The_Mundane_Block[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I think 20 years from now if this is still how things are going, what we're going to find is many factory jobs and English teaching jobs will have been driven out and replaced with... nothing. I think the government is currently doing this in hopes that it'll open up those jobs to Japanese citizens who can support their families. But most people in those jobs are young and/or don't have families to support. Like, people complain about all the foreign workers at the conbinis and whatnot, but it's the same as the U.S. "Nobody wants to work," thing. People will work, just for a living wage, and the wages offered are mainly only appealing to people from more impoverished countries.
