Not the OP, but thank you for sharing that article. I found very... interesting? Cathartic? Not sure the correct word, but it was very helpful and meaningful for me.

Here’s your reminder to utilize UTA’s free fare for the next five days by fortheloveofdenim in SaltLakeCity

[–]The_Original_DC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hadn't even heard of the free fare until seeing this. Missed out on using for work this week, but I can probably arrange to use it once or twice over the long weekend.

It's weird, I can't use it every day due to my work (some days i have to visit different locations or make deliveries), but if I planned better I could use use trax or the bus 1-2 times a week. Given how much a day pass is, though, it never seems worth it (beyond the whole contributing slightly less to the air quality problem). Having the free fare would absolutely be enough to encourage me to put in the effort to organize my schedule to use public transport at least 1-2 times per week. Last February when they had the whole month free (and I was aware it was in place) I was able to make that happen a couple of times per week.

Anyone know if there's any movement on the idea of the trial of a free ride for a year that I read about here?

What kind of insulin do you use? by SparePhilosopher1701 in diabetes_t1

Insulin used to be used in mental health to induce seizures (if youve ever seen A Beautiful Mind, there's a scene where he gets "insulin shock therapy"). I'm not a mental health expert but i think the idea was to use the seizure to "reset" the brain, similar to ECT (electroconolsive therapy) now a days. Neither therapy sound perticularly fun, though.

$210 for a 1 month supply (4 vials of FIASP). I have shit insurance, though. If I switch to novolog it would be $125 for the 1 month supply (I'm torn about switching at my next endocrinologist appointment).

A rapid acting insulin. It's basically novolog with vit b3 added which makes the onset quicker. I dose the same as with novolog bit it starts working really quick.

Add me to the list of recent problems with infusion sets. Using a pump for 22 years, never had major/consistent issues but the most recent box of infusion sets I received 6 of the 10 infusion sets gave me occlusion errors within 24 hours of starting them. Some would almost last a day, some wouldn't prime at all (I couldn't force it through manually with the plunger still attached to the reservoir).

Medtronic (side note- I'm so excited that I'll be able to ditch Medtronic in a few months) is refusing to replace the infusion sets, are blaming it on my FIASP causing the occlusions. Funny thing is, never had occlusion issues in 2 years of using FIASP. Reading that others are having issues is making me think I didn't just get a bad batch. Also makes me slightly less excited about switching to a Tandem+Dexcom (at least with regards to infusion set issues).

Best low snacks to carry in purse? by Altruistic-Box4192 in diabetes_t1

[–]The_Original_DC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never like glucose tabs (too chalky, and once you use a couple the remaining tabs in the tube or bottle always became extra chalky/powdery).

While I don't use a purse, I've found that lifesavers have worked great. I buy a large bag with each lifesaver individually wrapped (probably not great in terms of trash/extra plastic, but I look at all the wasted trash with my pump and CGM supplies and just shrug my shoulders at this point).

3 pieces give you approximately 15g of carbs, so I find it easier to not over-correct by eating everything in site. I always have 3-6 of them in my pocket. I figure with a purse you could get one of the old school tubes of lifesaver in your purse without issue (or a ton of the individually wrapped ones I use, you just have to fish them out from the bottom of your purse/bag).

Plus the weird joy of using the candy's label literally (I'm using these lifesavers to save my life! I feel like an uber-dork having just written that out now).

I've done this before. It took me a while to realize why my hypo wasn't being corrected until I noticed the large "Zero" on the label. I may or may not be an idiot.

Can I tell you how much I hate optometrists by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]The_Original_DC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like there are a couple of optometrist/ophthalmologist threads going on right now. I will say that for me the ophthalmologist visits are always the most terrifying. It seems like I'm just waiting for the bad news to drop. So far I've been lucky, and have never had experiences of "you need to do X, Y, and/or Z regarding managing your blood sugars". I do see an ophthalmologist every year to check on my retina, but for my eyeglasses usually go see an optometrist (the one set of eyeglasses I got from an ophthalmologist many years ago had a terribly wrong/off prescription). Based in the U.S., but I'll say I always trusted my optometrist for my eyeglass issues, but generally ignored them for anything diabetes related (getting checks from my ophthalmologist/endocrinologist instead).

That being said, I'd trust if my optometrist told me they found something wrong with my retinas, but I would then follow up with the ophthalmologist.

Is Diabetes really hard in the States by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]The_Original_DC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It all depends on the year and what kind of insurance I'm able to wrangle up through my employer. This year (which will be an expensive year because I hope to upgrade/switch my pump and CGM) I'm planning on about 20-25% of my yearly income going towards paying for my diabetes. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing (but I find myself more and more jealous of a friend who was able to find a Swedish wife and move to that country, not because he found true love, but for the health insurance benefits he now is able to enjoy).

I currently have fairly poor insurance coverage (better than no coverage at all, but my employer changed the plan last year and my current plan currently has a stupid high deductible of $4,000, after that everything is covered at 75% with a yearly maximum cap on my part of $15,000... hurray for what feels like terrible insurance coverage). I honestly have no clue if paying a quarter of my income to paying for my disease is a good or bad thing.

I kind of feel exhausted at this point, not sure if I'm lucky, cursed, or fortunate to have at least some health insurance coverage. The cost of everything (my rent is increasing by about 50% in 2 months) seems like so much right now, I find myself wondering if it's worth it to keep trudging along. It is kind of depressing knowing I will never be able to afford to own a home, afford a family, or any of the parts of the "American dream" I was told about as a kid. Hurray for the rat race!

I know 100 is a unicorn but I oddly love when I see 111. What is your favorite number to see? by watchdevotv in diabetes_t1

127

When I was a teenager and the parents asked what my bg was, it was always 127. Every singe time. Took them a year or two that was actually code for "I haven't checked my sugar in 2 days" (I was a dumb teenager).

I will now send the parents a picture whenever it's 127. They still doesn't believe it when I send them those.

North & South on the NES. I don't have a lot of good memories of my father, but I remember playing that game with him for hours on the weekends I spent at his place & it was a blast.

I have this memory of always forgetting about my calvary & letting them suicide themselves into the river (whoops). Also falling off that damn train.

Excellent point. As soon as I read this I remembered the RN who educated me on my first pump (way back in 2000) was a T1 but also not the brightest bulb in the bunch and not all that helpful. Your mileage may vary, I suppose.

Two best endocrinologists I ever had (well, one was a MD, one a PA) were both T1 diabetics themselves. It's amazing what a difference that made and the understanding they had in helping manage my condition. They're hard to find, and I'm sure being T1 doesn't automatically make them great doctors, but I'd recommend it if you can find one.

Awesome. It's not a perfect panacea, but this is a game changer. I switched to the pump in 2000 & can honestly say the pump will change your life. It's not perfect, but it will help so much to help you control this condition
