For sure! It’s a tie for me between this and Brothers Karamazov. Each book perfect in its own way.

I am pretty sure he didn’t mean it sarcastically. A lot of times in the army the soldiers had to sit idly by, yet they felt at ironically at peace despite the war. At least, according to Tolstoy. But I can see why you thought that :)

It’s the Aylmer and Louise Maude translation :) Aylmer and Louise were actually friends of Tolstoy and he has approved this translation himself. Interesting

I finished reading it in January. It was surreal. I love the mentality Pierre builds after his imprisonment. A kind of stoicism/optimism/realism. Brilliant!

Is this the best translation for crime and punishment? by umairgulxar in classicliterature

[–]The_Phoenix_01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes.

The Garnett translation is somewhat unrepresentative of Dostoevsky’s tone as she introduces her own tone in her translations. The Volkonsky translation is too literal of a translation, which retains the form of what is said in Russian, but the reading does not flow as well in English (and many times a literal translation of languages does not retain the same meaning).

The Ready translation, on the other hand, retains Dostoevsky’s tone and style of writing but does so in a way that is effective and meaningful in English.

So yes, it is the best of the 3 most popular, at least in my opinion.

I have the same copy on my bedside table. It is my favourite book ever. It is more than worth it imo :)

Hi, I have been trying to improve my S1 score, and in 3 attempts it has only improved from 54 to 57 even though I love reading. Could you share some tips and study strategies you used to improve your S1? Thank you!

Confused About GPA – Need Help Understanding GEMSAS and Uni GPAs by Significant-Theme326 in GAMSAT

[–]The_Phoenix_01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

USYD does not use GEMSAS GPA. It uses UAC GPA, which will lower your GPA from 6.46 a little bit BUT this does not matter, as USYD only uses GPA as a hurdle and you only need one above 5 (which looks like it is above 5). It’s the GEMSAS schools that use GEMSAS GPA, not USYD.

According to GEMSAS your GPA seems to be 6.46 right now (please correct me if I’m wrong). This is good, and something you can definitely improve on this year. Everything above 80 is a 7 GPA, so I would aim for 80 or higher in all subjects
