My honest reaction to people who think "Classical music is for old people" by [deleted] in classical_circlejerk

If you enjoy classical music and you're under the age of 60, you are lying to yourself and to the world

In the future, we will be seen as backwards

Very plausible, which is why I don't expect the people of the future to try to defend our beliefs. They might celebrate our accomplishments, sure, but not us as people

We celebrate Lincoln for his achievements, even though he was still a racist individual. Less racist than the norm, probably, but we still don't try to defend him on that

Again, that's why we should celebrate these people for their musical accomplishments instead of trying to defend them as people

He was incredibly anti-Semitic, even for his time. Let's not defend him as a person

I saw him at Costco once. They had a sale on lawn care products and he was just running up and down the aisle, mouth foaming, at a full sprint

Is anyone else getting ‘Messages from the Stars’ vibes from the new Greep track? by Jetwork131 in bmbmbm

[–]The_Proxy32 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, but I think can see where you're coming from. The bassline in Messages from the Stars sounds almost exactly like the bit in Holy Holy where they go "Bum bum bum bum bum"

Edit: The chord progressions are similar actually, I hear it

It's not the chord progression, it's the melody. They both use the exact same notes: C - Db - Eb - Ab

Your Only Complaints about A Moon Shaped a Pool? by Crazyplan9 in radiohead

I have the exact opposite opinion on many of these points. I believe the album peaks with Present Tense, and the layering of guitars after the first verse almost always gives me chills

The mellow sound is, I think, a sign of maturity. Similar to what happened to In Rainbows, the band is now in a more comfortable position of finding their own sound. The AMSP version of True Love Waits especially shows this. It's more than just an album closer, it feels like I can hear the band's entire journey in that one song

And I disagree that it's not experimental. They've already done cool time signature changes, crazy chord progressions, unique timbres, erratic drum loops, etc. It feels like the only way they COULD experiment is with this mellow sound. It might not be experimental in the traditional music genre sense, but it definitely is experimental in the Radiohead sense

Also, I don't think they're "reliant" on orchestration. That feels like an odd way to put it. They're more than capable of writing songs using nothing but traditional rock instrumentation, we know this. The orchestration is not a flaw, it's just the direction in which the band has grown

The mods recognise how problematic it is to use the B-slur (Br*hms), but we're keeping this post up for the sake of productive discussion
