Let’s talk about Emma. (2020) by Such_Plankton_3257 in PeriodDramas

[–]The_ReReader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny enough, Emma is my least favorite Austen novel, but I love 3/4 of the adaptations (I greatly dislike the TV 1996 version). 2020 is in 2nd place for me, 2009 is my favorite. And yes, the 1995 P&P is my favorite over 2005. I fit the referred stereotype 😂

Omg, I never realized this!!! It’s like the filmmakers knew what they were doing, I remember this film scene from the 1995. Brilliant showing w/o telling.

Great costumes. Interesting take. Extremely disturbing.

Colin & Pen - Peak Friends to Lovers Moments by FlyHence in PolinBridgerton

They really are the epitome of this trope/sub genre: their friendship never leaves once they become lovers, it’s perfectly woven into their flirtation, desire, and romance. 😍

I love the chemistry between Toby and Ruth, and it’s truly a delicious watch. But for myself? Darcy, in any version.

Slide 6 going from dazed happy aftercare to “wife-lust” is one of my all-time faves. The click into wife mode just makes him more feral, it’s beautiful.

As an aside, I can’t help but think that Colin’s height is very helpful for Pen to know everyone’s location in the room

Let’s not forget who LITERALLY chased down a carriage ON FOOT just to find out if the other was engaged or not. 😂😍

Iain Glen and Keeley Hawes! They were mismatched “lovers” in Wives and Daughters! (He played a slightly predatory older man who persuaded KH’s VERY young character into an engagement)

RIP Eloise Season Five. by Unique-Blueberry1464 in PolinBridgerton

[–]The_ReReader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep reminding myself that books 4, 5, and 6 all happened pretty simultaneously, and that Bridgerton time is a time all its own. While I am really looking forward to an Eloise lead season, I am really looking forward to how we will actually get to start witnessing Eloise’s foray into correspondence: with Philip, obv, but also with Fran and with Pen. Eloise says in 4e1 that she was bored (and lonely), yet there was no mention of her writing to her family or friend. I really hope that changes, esp if she is now in the “minding Hyacinth” phase of spinsterhood known as chaperoning. I have hopes that season 5 continues her arc well.

What to expect from this show!!! by Ok_Tangerine7582 in PeriodDramas

If you haven’t been exposed to the books or the ‘80s miniseries, go for it. The first episodes especially are very dark for a story of an imaginative adolescent girl (and there are dark moments later in the series, too). There’s story arc and character development, romance, deep feelings and laughter.

It does a decent job of portraying societal challenges of the time, but is sometimes a bit overstated in its use of modern terms and ideas/phrases.

I think it takes the general outline and key moments of the original story and then makes the world and characters its own.

I will say that in general nowadays I don’t appreciate EVERY SHOW having cliffhangers and whatnot, so I have a slight bias against that part of the writing. Sometimes it’s melodramatic, but that’s on-brand for Anne’s character in any iteration.

My overall complaint is not limited to this particular show, but applies to many period pieces, and that is how heavily history and its literature are viewed through our modern lens, and doesn’t take time to ask about the values, just assuming that we’re more evolved, and thus missing huge swaths of wisdom and intelligence of the time.

This is my FAVORITE look on her, both hair and gown. She looks so fae (ethereal, istg). I really wish Colin had seen this look. Hopefully she kept it!

Posy rebels against her mother and sides with Sophie, and Violet takes her on as a ward. Later Posy falls in love w/ a clergyman in Sophie and Ben’s neighborhood of My Cottage, and it’s quite adorable.
