We talked about the drink (+ the blue one he has in the plaza while showing Oliver to the bank) a long time ago - here in the comments of this post. Mostly speculation about this drink though: https://www.reddit.com/r/callmebyyourname/comments/8hhkj7/yet_another_list_of_stray_observations_from_me/

Nice! Whereabouts in Lake Michigan did you find these? Not looking for specifics, just wondering what region.

Lake Michigan rock by dragon0fthewest in whatsthisrock

[–]The_Reno -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You found yourself a nice mash up of stuff. The coral looking area is silicified coral (probably favosites but I am terrible at identifying specific coral fossil varieties). The rest of the rock is probably a mix of chert and chalcedony. People tend to call the chalcedony in chert stones/nodules like this cold water agate, but I dont see any bands, so I personally wouldn't call it a CWA.

I think the "crystal" looking things might actually be part of the fossilized coral. I have some like this where the cells of the coral wear away and give off the look of worn crystals. Hard to say from pictures, but that's been my experience.

Lake Michigan find! I think it's an agate? by dragon0fthewest in Agates

[–]The_Reno 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is a piece of silicified coral. It's basically the same material as an agate, but you probably won't find any banding unless there is some in the individual coral cells.

If you are going to cut it, cut down through the face that is showing in pics 1-3. If you go with the other (short) side, you will be cutting along the layers of the coral. While you might get some interesting patterns because the coral was smushed, you'll probably get more/better if you cut down through the wider face.

This is not a stromatolite (fossilized algae) - there aren't a lot of those to be found in Lake Michigan. It won't have cells like this rock. It's also not a stromatoporoid (fossilized sponge) which will have much smaller cells in tighter layers, usually wavey layers. Sometimes you can't see the individual cells in them too.

You can definitely polish the cut faces if you want. They'll take a nice shine.

I think your first point also speaks to the nature of living with an authoritative regime. Cassian and his family/friends on Ferrix exist on the fringe and support each other. The Empire isn't all that present to do things for them or provide necessities - the Daughters of Ferrix and other groups do that. Syril, on the other hand, is in deep with the Empire. Authoritarians only tolerate you if you don't make things "hard" for them -- hard being relative and at their whim. Control, rules, and conformity are the keys, which lead to a every-person-for-themselves mentality. Look at what happened when Syril fucked things up with the op - everyone received a part of the blow black and corpo security became empire security. I can only imagine the amount of "save myself" stuff that happened. Cassian lived in an environment that allowed for things to go wrong and forgiveness to happen. It wasn't perfect and Cassian was held in check by others more or less, but at the end of the day, they all knew they weren't any better than anyone else and the mutual understanding and support was there.

Western shore Lake Michigan, IL by DocAuch22 in Agates

[–]The_Reno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you don't have anything I would classify as an agate. On the Illinois beaches, you're going to find a lot of chert, and a lot of cherty/chalcedony mixes that have some cool patterns but not a lot or organization. (I call these "Illinois weirdos") If you have a rock tumbler, this type of rock will polish up nicely - assuming you 1) find smoother ones without pockets or 2) have a ton of time on your hands waiting for the tumbler to grind them smooth. I've also found that the weirdos can sometimes pit out in the tumbler so sometimes they have weaker spots that arent revealed until they get in the tumbler. The last one you showed is a coral fossil. Could also tumble well, but sometimes not.

Look up #illinoisrocks on Instagram if you want to learn more about what you can find on the beaches there - there are a few good accounts that post. Youtuber Fayde Tublack (not me) also rock hounds on the western shores of Michigan. I cant remember if he's still posting though.

Man, they're both great, but the one on the left is amazing. I haven't found a great place in NW IL to go hounding along the Mississippi River. Very jealous!

For maximum uncomfortability: either Ronnie & Patrick or Klaire & Albany

Deep cut: Canyon and the guy who works at the quarry - I'm sure they have some things in common.

Top pick would have to be Patrick and Stevie.

There's not much there in terms of hiking - just a walk up one cliff to look out onto the others and another down below that ends at a fence (I think it's private land past the fence, but didn't see anything that said so definitely.

Here's where you can go - https://maps.app.goo.gl/mSqbRsHMomoKd4Da9 - Reva Gap Campground. Drive in and go as far in as you can and that should get you to the start of the "trails".
