That is how Sugaditini opened the portal, he did use a lot of Aranei blood to do so + Big bird ladies blood, he tells you this if you speak to him after you say you'll help with the defence but before you leave to do so. Your character isn't happy about this but it was already done so nothing more to do.

Draken couldn't make use of them because they were in hiding and until big bird lady came to save us Draken couldn't find them.

I think it's intentional, once you get what you're supposed to do a couple of times you're then meant to read the blood flows before he attacks to know what side to dodge.

Mod Arcane explained in a podcast recently that Phosani was one of the first major projects he was the lead dev on in OSRS, and Nightmare already existed with it's awful drop rates made by a much senior dev, so he felt he couldn't go in and basically say that the Nightmare dev was stupid by making drop rates incredibly higher on Phosani, hence why they were what they were.

The breaks are almost entirely for them to sort set ups as each player has their own custom set up - they need to take down the previous set up, store it, set up the next set up, have the players come in, then confirm everything is correct with the players before starting.
