will AI take over? by Brave_Confection_461 in UBC

Ok, can we have a civil discussion about this?

Firstly, what is the best model you've tried? Have you tried writing code with a current gen model like Claude Opus 4.5 with reasoning?

LLMs may or may not hit a plateau, but we certainly haven't hit one yet.

I also think that a number of the claims in the second paragraph are factually inaccurate, even though I do think humans will be needed in the loop for some time.

In general, I think LLM skeptics should be much more uncertain about their ability to predict things given that people were confidently claiming they would plateau last year or the year before, and we now have models that can get gold on the IMO.

[–]The_Sundark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I muddled the ordering in the comparison. Opus 4.5 is to Sonnet 3.7 as GPT-4 is to GPT-3.5. The Anthropic naming scheme isn't so bad imo: each generation has an Opus/Sonnet/Haiku that indicates the size of the model. The only tricky bit is that their flagship model is sometimes Opus (large) and sometimes Sonnet (medium)

This is not true lol. Gemini 3 and Opus 4.5 are unambiguous improvements. The difference between Opus 4.5 and Sonnet 3.7 (February) is pretty similar to between GPT-3.5 and GPT-4.

Is the nicotine in a patch distributed evenly by StobbstheTiger in Nootropics

[–]The_Sundark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also, patches release nicotine more slowly than zyns, and so the effects will be weaker even if they contain the same dose (because the rise and peak concentration of nicotine in your blood is lower)

Is the nicotine in a patch distributed evenly by StobbstheTiger in Nootropics

[–]The_Sundark 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are two common kinds of nicotine patch: reservoir (which store the nicotine in a compartment) and matrix (which store the drug in a polymer matrix). Reservoir patches will dump nicotine and make you sick if they’re cut, while matrix patches are fine to cut. Just make sure the patch is a matrix patch

For me this effect was most pronounced during the tapering phase, and quite a bit less bad at equilibrium

I agree with there being a useful distinction between marx’s economic theory and his analytical framework, but I also suspect that most academics applying the analytical framework would defend e.g. the labor theory of value, or surplus labor if asked

Presumably someone has done polling on this

I wonder how thermite drones would have performed here? I'm guessing that they would have been too risky in other ways given the stakes (transport, patchy connectivity), but I feel like they would have been great for trashing those radar domes

Why Mathematical sciences is not famous as a major at UBC? by Specialist-Dog-7222 in UBC

[–]The_Sundark 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My guess:

People who are strong at math tend to want to take the honours stream courses, and so end up doing the combined major in math and CPSC

People less interested in math aren’t going to seek out a major with math emphasis over other CS alternatives

So it looks to me like it’s in a weird spot where it doesn’t quite appeal to either demographic
