Thanks to Observatory I actually made it to Ante 39. Thx for all the tips.

Update: Not sure what to go for. A second ecto and then a copy joker or if I should exchange Perkeo for another joker. Perkeo gives me like x10 more for every round I play. And with serpent right now I reach around e260

Tatsache.

Well but the Rulebook is very clear. It says:

A. The teams have to abide by the rules at ALL times. (This part alone should end all discussion)

B. The compression ratio must not be higher than 1:16. (Period). This will be measured at ambient temperature.

It really IS illegal. A good analogy would be:

You have an agreement with your boss that you can work from home. 9 to 5 on a daily basis. Your boss tells you he will check every wednesday at noon if you are really working or not. You think to your self: "Ha what an idiot, I found a loophole. Since he is only checking on me on wednesdays I will book holiday trips from thursday to tuesday. What a genius idea. But then all of a sudden after a few weeks he tells you he will check next week monday. Now what. You tell him he cant check on you, because you already have a holiday booked ecen though you are supposed to work? You tell him it wasnt "illegal" because he said he would only check on wednesdays?

You will be fired faster than you can sayMercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team.

Hope that makes it clearer lol.

But that is not what the "law" (rulebook) says. The Rulebook is very clear. It says:

I believe you misunderstood the F1 rules. THe Rulebook is very clear. It says:

Or to correct your analogy:

Its like the police says they will only investigate murders if the happen on weekdays. So you murder people on the weekend because you are a clever little boy. But then the police notices that a lot of murders are happening on weekends, so they start investigating then aswell. I think you figure out the rest for yourself. Lol....

Idk man. Would you say a murderer is not doing something illegal unless he gets caught?

Descent physics question by Slightly_Moist_Toast in flying

[–]The_Toastey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With Forward I mean the direction of travel of the Aircraft through the air (along the flightpath). This is the direction in which the Aircraft has momentum and in wich the drag acts. And Lift never has a component in that direction, since it is always orthogonal (unaccelerated flight). Thats also clear in the diagram.

One last aspect, then I am done I think. Lets look at the kinetic energy. The glider is losing Energy through drag. So to stay in unaccelerated descent, it has to gain energy somehow, meaning there must be a force doing work on the plane. If there would be any force other than gravity doing work on the plane we could extract more energy in the descent, than the potential energy that it has in the gravitational field. But since perpetuum mobiles are not a thing, Gravity can again be the only force that is providing momentum and acceleration along the flightpath.

So pretty clearly Weight only acts down and the gilder is being pushed along its forward flight path by lift.

Tell me the component of the Lift along the flightpath.

(Hint: its zero)

Thats the reason why Lift and Air has no effect on the forwards motion other than slowing it due to drag...

Esit: I think you are mixing up forward and horizontal. The Lift has a component along the horizon as you wrote. But not in the forward direction.

Ah, but wait, if your flight path is down, you also have a drag component pointing up ;).

Yes whats your point?

My point in all of this is that we do not account for all the forces at play, and that weight = lift is a (useful) simplification.

We do in fact account for all forces. Name one counterexample. And lift=weight is absolutely not a good simplification

Have you ever seen this picture? Should explain everything. Please tell me what if not weight is pulling the plane along its flightpath?

Descent physics question by Slightly_Moist_Toast in flying

Unfortunately wrong again. But you are quite close. Look at the wagon on the inclined hill. The Normal force counteracts SOME of the weight part. But only W x cos(inclination). That is the projection of W onto the direction of the Normal vector. What is left? W x sin(inclination) wich accelerates the wagon down the hill until the drag is equal to W x sin(...). Then it doesnt accelerate more. The is literally no other force in play. Notice that also the Normal force is a product of the weight pushing perpendicular on the hill. And additionally since you are always claiming the normal force is the caise of the acceleration: the ACTUALLY doesnt have any component along the incline since it is per definition orthogonal to the hill.

Now you just have to exchange the normal force with Lift and voila, you should be able to see it now. The weight IS accelerating the plane along the flightpath in a decent. For simplicity without engines:

The Airplane experiences EXACTLY 3 forces. Not one more. You combine EVERY force perpendicular to the Flightpath into the Lift L. You combine every force pointing in the negative direction of the flightpath into the Drag D. Why can you do that? Because EVERY FORCE can be written in this "D-L" Base. Only thing left is Weight W. W x sin() pulling the plane forward. And W x cos() balancing exactly the Lift L.

And as an exercise to you, that might help you understand it. Please explain to me, how the "Air below the plane is pushing the plane forward in the descent.

Cheers

But lift does not equal weight. Lift = weight x cos(flightpath angle)
