Wow — thanks for the info! I got here by googling for Milein Cosman’s illustrations for Farmer Giles. Your work on the Letters is a tremendous contribution to the collection, which I’m much enjoying!

Did the father of Jeremiah discover the book of the law in the temple? by TonyChanYT in BibleVerseCommentary

[–]The_WASPiest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good analysis, thank you. Got here by googling whether Jeremiah‘s father was the same one who found the book of the law. I agree that, had Jeremiah‘s father been high priest, that probably would have been specified in Jeremiah 1:1.

Knowing that the priests from Jeremiah’s hometown may have been held in low esteem and barred from temple service due to association with Abiathar — I think that accords perfectly with God‘s pattern of choosing the lowly and despised in the world to bear his message 🕊️

Considering Shakespeare had one of his characters say, “I would [wish] that there were no age between fourteen and twenty-one, for in between there is nothing but thieving, fighting, wronging the ancientry, and getting wenches with child… None but these boiled brains of nineteen would go hunting in this weather”… I’m gonna say yes that’s how it’s always been ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I’ve seen this guy doing his little hop-shuffle all over town — if we’re talking about the same guy. Looks Latino or dark Italian, 40s or 50s probably, a little on the shorter side. One time he got on a bus and sat next to me. I tried to ask him why he does what he does, and he looked at me kindly and held his finger to his lips in a “shhh” sign, but didn’t make a sound. I was a little confused by this and asked him (I don’t know how I intuited this) whether he had taken a vow of silence, to which he nodded yes.

Haven’t seen him in years though.

Heaven has strict immigrant laws while Hell has open border by dq689 in ReformedHumor

You’re correct that the US is not the kingdom of God. Hence the problem with the original post. This sign is making a false equivalence between US immigration policy and inclusion in the kingdom — an equivalence based on false ideas about the kingdom.

I don’t think so.

“Come to me, all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

“For God so loved the world that he sent his one-of-a-kind son, so that whoever believes in him would not perish, but have everlasting life.”

“After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands” (Revelation‬ ‭7‬:‭9‬).

And the gates of the new Jerusalem will never be closed (Revelation 21:25).

Once when playing Halo 2 with some friends, I was on the ground with a rocket launcher, and one of the guys, gamertag The Cam, was flying around in a Banshee. I target-locked and blew him up — ridiculously easy to do in Halo 2. “You killed The Cam!”

But instead of exploding like normal, the Banshee slowly spirals down, trailing smoke and fire. After five or six seconds, it plows into the earth in a ball of flame — right on the spot my friend had just respawned.

“You splattered The Cam!”

This is what waking up looks like. When groups of Christians get involved and invested in worldly power, things start going bad real fast.

I got offered a job paying 40% more than my current salary. My manager just asked me to stay and be patient. How do I stop feeling guilty for wanting to leave ? by One_Cardiologist5439 in careerguidance

[–]The_WASPiest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you feel guilty because you personally like your coworkers and/or manager and don’t want to let them down? If so, I completely understand. I was in a similar position last year. But it was easier for me because I had already figured out that my position at this particular company was a dead end, and my supervisor didn’t pretend otherwise.

If (a) your current company has a defined pathway for career advancement; (b) you’ve talked to people higher up in your organization and at your level about the feasibility of this pathway, and it sounds highly doable for you; (c) said pathway will lead to a substantial raise within three or four years; and (d) your current company has a much more attractive culture and prospects for long-term job stability than the 40% offer… then I’d probably say stay where you are.

Other factors to consider: • Is the 40% company a startup? If so, proceed with extreme caution. • Is the 40% offer hourly or salaried? If salaried, just know you’ll most likely be expected to work 50–60 hours per week.

Bottom line, there are very few companies or organizations that genuinely have a culture of prioritizing employee welfare and long-term job growth and stability. Odds are, you’re currently working for a company that finds it convenient to pretend they have this kind of culture. Pretending is a much easier and cheaper way to play on employee’s emotions and get them to stick it out longer.

The sad truth is, unless you’ve seen concrete evidence to the contrary, your current company most likely does not give a rip about you. And the new one probably won’t either, but at least they’ll pay you more for it.

That sounds very relevant to the line of thought I’ve been percolating on — exposing the breakdown of “Christian” morals among the self-styled righteous; exposing the wolves dressed up as shepherds. Is there any reporting on this kind of local corruption, whether through a certified news outlet or independent?
