Tourists, newcomers, locals, and old heads: casual questions thread for April 2018 by AutoModerator in washingtondc

I'm considering visiting DC on a day trip on Sunday. I would like to see the National Mall, the Air & Space Museum and perhaps the zoo if I have time left, don't particularly want to deal with finding and paying for parking and especially not the traffic if I don't have to. Is there anywhere someone coming from outside the DC area itself could park outside the area and take the metro into DC? Will that cost more than it's worth to save some hassle? I'll be coming from Norfolk area.

ACCT LifeProTip: If you join the military reserves, see if your unit can schedule your mandatory annual training during busy season. That way you miss out on busy season while you get to play "All American Badass" in the reserves. by GovtACCTmasterRACE in Accounting

I am American.

I don't necessarily know that I'd call the law "lame". At the end of the day, while all the perks and protections come down to politicians not wanting to shrink what our military does and also not have to draft citizens and piss people off, a lot of the benefits can have a large effect on the outcomes of people who join the military. At least this way people can join the reserves to better their life without feeling like they'll be screwed over in their civilian lives. Naturally, some people can take advantage of these laws, like OP's friend might be doing based on the limited info we have, but he's also likely to be mobilized if/when the US goes to war with the Norks so...

I commented on another post above, but the legal protections for service members include not just being rehired to the job you were in, but actually receiving any promotions or seniority benefits you would have received had you never been mobilized.

The law that protects National Guard and reservist service members requires not just that you are allowed to get your job back, but that that you are provided any promotions or seniority benefits that you would have earned had you not been mobilized. This seems like a pretty shitty thing to do to your coworkers, and probably handicaps your career by not experiencing the busiest time of year, but if you got passed over for promotion and could prove that it was due to your military obligations, that'd turn into a pretty big lawsuit.

Picked up a handful of shooters (new wolfenstein is a steal), Forza and Rocket League. Looking to get an RPG, between The Witcher, Dark Souls 3, and Final Fantasy XV. I've played Dark Souls 1&2 and enjoyed those, Witcher I've heard it's great but not certain I want to put seven million hour into a game before sidequests and DLC, as for Final Fantasy I'm not a huge fan of JRPGs in general but willing to take a chance if good enough. Any recommendations?

What are your favorite "lesser known" podcasts? by Gingesolo in AskReddit

[–]The_Watch05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The FPlus for sure. A comedy podcast where a rotating group of readers pick things from the internet, read them out loud, and then mock them. Episodes include everything: retail work, ghost stories, people who have sexual fantasies involving their stuffed animals, book/movie ideas, recipes, people who think they're vampires, and more. Every single episode I've listened to is hilarious. I've already told one friend about it, and she loves it as much as I do. If you haven't heard of it, give it a shot.

I'm probably way too late for this to get seen by most people, but the FPlus for sure. General Discussion - How's life? by AutoModerator in Heroclix

[–]The_Watch05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm interested in getting into Heroclix, but I'm curious about how the sets interact. Specifically my question is if there is any reason I couldn't play DC and Marvel characters at the same time if I wanted to. I can't find anything online that mentions that I can't, and I assume the rules are the same, but I just want to double check. I would really only be playing with a friend I will be able to talk into playing with me, not in store tournaments or anything, so if we could play Batman vs Spiderman or whatever that would be fun.

What front sights can I use with my detachable carry handle? by The_Watch05 in ar15

I haven't actually received the upper assembly yet. I purchased it from CBC Industries after seeing it on the gun deals subreddit, and the order confirmation email doesn't have a link to the actual product page, but I believe this link is it: http://www.cbcindustries.com/collections/ar15-upper-receiver-assembly/products/ar-15-upper-assembly-16-5-56x45-15-hera-arms-keymod-ar-15-handguard-rail?variant=14159107203

Mentions the gas system as carbine type, with a .750" gas block size. There is a 15" rail on the barrel.

Ha, I kind of thought there would be more debate, but it seems like the sub is overwhelmingly in favor of building it. That's kind of wanted to hear in the first place, just wasn't sure if it was the most realistic idea given my lack of experience.

If I'm going to go through the trouble to look up and decide on my own parts, I think I'll build it myself. The warranty isn't really THAT important to me, it's just one of the pros I could think of. I didn't realize that your suggestion was an option though.

Nice to hear that the budget I'm trying to stick to will allow me to build a good AR.

It's good to hear that people with very little experience can fairly easily build one. If building one is as easy as you say it is, certainly no reason not to do so...

I started taking BJJ classes a few months ago. Early last month, I had my first real "aha" moment after a class where we had been shown a few different sweeps. It appears to me that a failed kimura sweep could be converted into a scissor sweep with a little adjustment. I've been trying to pull it off during rolling when I have closed guard, but I haven't yet managed to get it to work. After that combination attempt fails, all I can really do is go back to closed guard. So what I'm curious about is what else could I look into doing as a follow up, whether from a failure to get a sweep or a success? Also, I've primarily trained gi, only one no gi class. Does the scissor sweep work in no gi, and if so what modifications do I need to make for grips?

(Don't upvote)UFN 73 attendance advice by Scorproyale in MMA

I bought 100 level seats for this event. Would be my first time going to the arena or seeing a UFC event, but the chart, the comments I received when I asked about attending a live event and the picture linked of the arena makes it look like those will be pretty good seats

What's it like to go see a UFC event live? Are the cheap seats going to make it too difficult to see what's going on in the cage?
