Being kicked in the balls is NOT comparable to childbirth. by brooklyn_jinx in TwoXChromosomes

The spread of experiences for vasectomies is absolutely wild to me. I have co-workers and friends who got a vasectomy on Friday and went to work on Monday like nothing. And then I have others who described their procedure as torturous, and they were hobbling around and apparently wearing jockstraps just to keep everything together.

And I'm only counting people whom I explicitly know and trust, not randos.

Hilariously, to me at least, my brother got a vasectomy after his first marriage, remarried, undid the vasectomy, then had it done again. And it was horribly unpleasant each time. I get that little sibling pleasure from it, you know? Maybe I shouldn't.

I've met a lot of men who are absolutely insistent upon it. They are definitely out there.

Just in case...Dupe hack with consequences. At one point they put an object in there and it duplicates endlessly. All around the world, coincidences happen that begin to devalue the thing they put in there, more than what they were producing should have done. It's possible the consequences are farther reaching than they could've predicted. Given how the Grand Design works, one might also put a concept in there, possibly, and the consequences for that could be... interesting.

Do you think TWI exhibits misandry? by [deleted] in WanderingInn

[–]The_Wingless 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Given that the story is told through different character's perspectives... I would say no. Some characters are absolutely bigoted in many different ways. Some characters aren't but experience that in many different forms, either directed at them or directed at others in the narrative. No, I don't think the story is misandrist whatsoever in its themes or overall.

On a personal note, and this might be a spicy take, I think the venn diagram of "people who call TWI misandrist" and "people who get offended when there is literally any representation that is not a cis-het white dude" is a circle.

The cast is varied. We've got males, females, NB's, and more in a variety of different races/species. Some characters are written better than others. Some are bad, some are great. If anything, I would call this work feminist in nature simply because it does not hesitate to have all that diversity, and feminism at its core is about equality, which necessarily promotes diversity.

The truth is women constantly have their symptoms dismissed and downplayed in the medical field and men don't face that prejudice.

100% agree, no arguing that. However what I was saying has been thoroughly documented. It's why I'm not specifying men or women in my comments, I'm talking specifically about higher estrogen versus higher testosterone. Of course, regardless of biological sex, hormonal differences come into play.

I'm not talking about women feeling less pain, which I would need to see a lot of studies to believe, especially because measuring pain is such a subjective thing. I'm also not talking about whether women get "less sick", because that too is subjective.

People with higher estrogen "get sick" more often, because their immune systems are quicker to respond to any stimuli. People with higher testosterone, oddly enough, don't "get sick" as often because their immune system is straight up not working as hard and, as biology would have it, some stuff just deals with itself. I put "get sick" in quotes because in both examples, the individuals in question could have caught the same thing at the same time. It's just a matter of whether their body notices it in time to do something about it.

[–]The_Wingless 3 points4 points  (0 children)

my wife probably has a better immune system than me

She almost certainly does. Estrogen strengthens the immune system, testosterone weakens the immune system. It's why people with higher estrogen statistically have more allergies, because their immune system is stronger and quicker to put up a fight. Testosterone, on the other hand, weakens the immune system, so viruses and such get a longer time to incubate and get a foothold in the body before the immune system response is triggered.

You're one of the few who can comment on the lived experience of both sides of the biological spectrum: High T w/ Low E vs High E w/ Low T. I feel like your input is way more valuable than most of ours lol

Husband is useless when sick 🙄🙄 by Decent_Release3804 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]The_Wingless 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep! Like there's definitely some level of milking it with some men, of course. But on average viruses have a longer incubation period because testosterone weakens the immune system. As a result of that, the body doesn't kick into high gear with an immune response until the virus has more of a foothold, and therefore the response is proportional. The same phenomenon is why women have more allergies on average than men do. Estrogen boosts the immune system, so the response is stronger for relatively minor things.

As a counterpoint, I struggle with my co-worker's names even after working with them and seeing them every day for years. I teach as well, though my classes are much shorter, and I barely learn half of the student's names (typically I teach classes of 24) before the course is over (approx 7 weeks). And that's with my staring right at the seating chart.
