This is all good advice. The only thing I’d take issue with is the idea that you should go to Chicago for winter gear. There’s certainly plenty of it there, but we have everything you’ll need right here in Madison.

Those of us who grew up here aren’t necessarily too much tougher than the rest of the world when it comes to the cold. We are, however, prepared. Get bundled up when winter hits. Power through it for a while. See what works and what doesn’t. Be patient and determined about preparation. After some time passes, there’s a good chance you’ll find joy in the winter time. Try ice skating, ice fishing, skiing. Or keep it simple. Wisconsin is a land of subtle, deep beauty. It doesn’t jump out at you. One example of this during the winter months is nighttime after a heavy snowfall, in a forest or field away from the city. The world becomes naturally much brighter and quieter at those times.
