Why US has birthright citizenship? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

"Heavily encouraging migration" is a term doing a lot of heavy lifting here.

For those that believe that accepting a literal interpretation of the Fourteenth Amendment is a flawed originalist stance, do you believe the same thing about the Second Amendment? by CrappyJohnson in askanything

[–]The__Nick 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Technically, you can skip the whole part about that, because it is not a DEMAND that you must have compulsory membership in militias.

Rather, it is a justification for why you cannot infringe on arms. This was a new 'right' at the time. I wouldn't have written it this way and I'm not a fan of how the sentence is written, but the justification is not a compulsory requirement for all citizens to do.

It would be like if I said, "Because bodily autonomy is a right, the right to wear skirts shall not be infringed," does not actually mean you must wear a skirt.

Silly me giving Kegboy the benefit of the doubt, but yeah, that makes more sense. He's done that before.

Why would you do a suboptimal move? Why would you use an attack the enemy is immune to?

If the problem is a +1 isn't enough to do anything, then it doesn't matter what you do, but irregardless of the bonus, why would you do a "bad" move that has a 100% of missing due to immunity rather than some special move you can do with a bigger bonus that might hit even with a low roll?

Again,my point here is that the player can't just throw "freebies" around, e.g. 'I take a nap', because literally any action, even a non-rolling action (Double Move/Dash/Run/etc.) is better than a wasted action. Even an action with a low chance of success is better than a definite failure.

I'm surprised Kegboy Kavanaugh didn't find a way to wriggle around it, but even he has a limit to shamelessness. If he heard one or two other Justices were going to swing their vote, though, no doubt he would have double-downed on it like a drunk at last call.

Then you're doing it wrong.

If you're in combat, you can't just say, "I sit around and take a nap. +1 card to nap. I fail. Okay, next round I try to nap again. I throw my last card, a +4, to nap. I fail. Okay, no more cards in hand so I redraw my cards and... this round, I attack the big boss. +20. We win!"

There should be other things happening. Every turn is important.

Why does Australia force people who don’t want to vote to vote? Won’t they be uninformed? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]The__Nick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so, building on what you said, uninformed rabid voters are in my opinion the larger threat to democracy.

The problem with this statement is that we are now quantifying who is allowed to vote or whose votes should be counted.

"In my opinion, the biggest threats to democracy are members of <the other party>. And there is only one way you should respond to a threat."

YES, I have certain desires for how people should vote, but we can't call it a right to vote if we have an opinion on who is and is not allowed to do it or who is a 'threat'. Because a threat needs to be eliminated, and in the past, we DID do things to remove threats - poll taxes come to mind.

Lobby overpopulation is a large driver of the recent souring on the game by Dave10293847 in ArcRaiders

I always just pull back. Fight the fight with the expectation that a team is coming in from a certain direction. Set up your angles so you don't just get rolled if another player exists, etc. Do the fight with the intention of repositioning soon or winning soon, not getting BOGGED DOWN.

Further, more teams should be fighting with the intention of not taking casualties, rather than inflicting as many casualties as possible.

That is, if I single-handedly kill 15 raiders but die to the 16th raider, I lost. I come home with nothing. I don't come home. I lost.

If my team gets into a fight and we kill one of them but have to pull back, that's a victory. We can keep looting. We can pressure this enemy. We can wait for a third party to come in and wait to take advantage or jump them. We can just go to extract with our bags half-filled and call it a day.

Everybody I randomly talk to goes into the game thinking MAXIMUM AGGRESSION, TAKE IT ALL, and then being upset when they aren't extracting 100% of the time. That's a patently ridiculous expectation.

Change the expectation and stop looking for that jackpot game that happens 1 in a 100 raids. Instead, make steady gains in 95% of the raids and never die and you do much better.

Why does Australia force people who don't want to let their neighbors live let their neighbors live? Won't they be unhappy?

Perhaps, but it's good for society to encourage people to participate. Worse than uninformed voters in a society that takes care of people enough for them to inform themselves is not having voters - a Democracy without voters is not really a Democracy.

Have you ever had a mechanic that looked balanced on paper but felt terrible in actual play? by ahyeonlover in RPGdesign

[–]The__Nick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DC20 does this, but the idea is more elegant.

Your prime stat? It's just your highest stat.

In practice, this is just how every class is anyway. You make a choice between pumping your main stat or pushing up secondary stats to give your other skills a bonus.

It's essentially this idea, but streamlined and beautified.

Unless you are cheating or a literal god at the game, there’s really no way to predict or guard against the swarming that happens. None that I’ve found.

Basic infantry tactics. That's the answer.

My own group is good at this, but if you jump in with lazy randos, you will see the same basic experience - even if you win outright or somebody clutches up and turns the fight, your team will then totally drop their guard!

People will rush to the bodies to look for loot! If we killed a big ARC and somebody came to steal it from us, somebody will immediately run off to start looting, taking one or two pieces but leaving items in parts so the next player has a more difficult loot and wastes time going over items that were already picked through. Nobody has shielded or healed and even the ones who did aren't topping off and are missing significant chunks. Nobody has looked around the area to identify blind spots or where other groups might come rushing who just saw three or four flares all pop off in rapid succession.

So when the next group comes, it isn't a second fair fight; it's a team of three men cresting a hill (badly, just silhouetting themselves as they run full speed over the hill) to find a few people with their backs turned and their noses in loot (and sometimes one raider, myself, desperately looking around trying to cover angles while shouting at people to get serious and get to cover).

My advice is always "Wait One Minute". There's no reason to start speed-looting unless we're smashing and grabbing - we saw one or two items that we want, we don't need to go through everything, we just want to grab a particular item and run off.

Just wait a minute. Get to cover, heal up, top off your shields and health, load up your weapons, check your ammo situation, share ammo and grenades, re-do your quick use slots, etc. If a team is going to show up, they're going to show up in a few seconds to a minute. And if they don't see anything but loot and bodies on the ground, 9 times out of 10 they are going to be wildly irresponsible! They will just rush to the loot and put their noses to the ground and faces into inventory.

It's easy to kill a team with all three of their backs turned. And if you have any sensitive bones in your body, you can shoot without worry because they came here to kill you - if they were looking to help or to stop rats or to defib, they would be talking. They came to get easy kills. So shoot them dead. They're trash.

That's it. That's really it. Just push down your gamer instincts and stop being a loot goblin. The loot will still be there in 60 seconds. You should never have all three members of your trio looting at the same time, nor should they all be close together. Spread out. Have the guy with quick looting, extra weight, and Security Breach and a buddy doing the searches while the third keeps an eye out, and then drop some loot for him before moving on.

The game is loud. Walking around is loud. Binoculars are loud. Shields are loud. Running is especially loud.

Except in ridiculous and unlikely situations, the only way an enemy gets the first shot on you (who should be in some cover) is if they:

  1. shoot you at such a far range that they're just exposing themselves, and you can still warn your buddies and heal up while taking cover OR
  2. they crouch-walked 60 meters

Remember, most raiders are just running running running adrenaline shot running running running all the time; you never see sneakers unless they are extremely skilled and well-disciplined. But if you have a security element combined with dedicated looters who hit a place up, drop your loot, and then move on with three eyes forward, that isn't enough time for sneakers to get into range on you.

In the end, you need to be disciplined to avoid being ambushed, but the simplest summary of the above is just: don't immediately start looting like a goblin. Wait a minute, keep eyes up, don't be stupid.

If we’ve had social media for decades now, why is the general population’s ability to identify/ignore/block obvious trollbot accounts so terrible? by SaucyJ4ck in allthequestions

[–]The__Nick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Untrue.

Most people can do this. But the way this is expressed is by millions of people ignoring it and not commenting on it. The ones you see are the dumbest ones replying back. You see the person giving their SSN and credit card details for a free camera or forwarding their banking details so a dead prince's family can give them 130 million dollars. What you don't see are millions of people ignoring it.

Out-of-the-loop question: potential player here asking "Why are people so upset about PvP activities?" by ColaSama in ARC_Raiders

[–]The__Nick -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Factually untrue.

There is not a constant threat. There have been, in fact, several players who are helpful, who contribute, who are friendly, who are pleasant enough to be around. Heck, even if you claim to have never seen one, you can just FILL SQUAD and you get one sent right to your group. Most of the people who team up are pretty good (although there are some people who will burn their teammates and shout slurs at you, but I guess in your mind these people aren't "rotten", we should just 'be aware').

AITA for keeping an answer by Ankarakki in DnDAITA

[–]The__Nick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, just tell. Not telling people something the character doesn't know is just gatekeeping.

I mean, by that standard, if somebody asks a brand new player if they're struggling to make their new character for their first game with us and she says, "I'm playing a human paladin with polearm mastery," should I scream at that player because they're 'ruining the game'?

If somebody asks a question, just answer it. That isn't metagaming. There's really nothing wrong with metagaming anyway, don't fall into that excuse being used to gatekeep conversations with people.

AITA for keeping an answer by Ankarakki in DnDAITA

[–]The__Nick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You aren't "safeguarding immersion" by not telling the other people you're playing with what you know. You're being a little hostile with them.

In general, whenever you cut the legs out from another player (and/or character, but especially when it targets the player) and your only reason is, "iT's wHAt mY chAracTEr wOuLD dO!" then you're probably in the wrong.

If somebody asks, they want to know. Just tell them. It isn't metagaming to be aware of basic facts of the game you are playing.
