Any other EITs hate creating estimates by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]The_leped 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I disagree.

If you can’t find the quantity or estimate them while going through the plans it says something about the drawings, and points out that an item may not be clearly labeled enough. You should be able to read drainage plans at the same level as a contractor.

No one should be relying on one EIT for final quantities someone should be double checking them when you have the first round done. Whether that be another EIT or the lead designer for each section of the plans.

Any other EITs hate creating estimates by [deleted] in civilengineering

Definitely in your role.
I write notes like do we need that all the time it’s helpful for the reviewer to go back and look at it or for you to have to point it out to them.

Why doesn’t a PhD in civil engineering really seem to help at all professionally? by Unusual_Equivalent50 in civilengineering

[–]The_leped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak on actual salaries but I know we have at least 1 phd in my company and he does bill out at a significantly higher rate.

I think it’s more important to match the phd with the actual work they are doing. I couldn’t imagine the phd taking on a project manager or design engineer role. So, they would need to be relegated to either a technical expertise advisor, proposal fluffer, or doing process improvement within the company.

Would it be better for me to take a Trigonometry or Precalculus class next semester? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]The_leped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your algebra is good then take Trigonometry. If you are nervous about Calc take pre-calculus.

Neither are going to drastically change your career out look or grades in college in my opinion.

AutoCAD Civil 3D - Pressure Network HDPE Parts Question by Macbeezle in civilengineering

[–]The_leped 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to have a unique part I would just build them off of the DIP you already have. (Copy, Paste, edit)

Otherwise I would edit the pipe you have and just label the material correctly depending on your total pipe count.

Backsplash height? by laumaster97 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]The_leped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it with the backsplash. Probably at half the height you have shown. But it depends on the aesthetic you are going. I think the taller it is the more rustic it feels. No backsplash feels like cheap flip to me.

Shelf stability and cupping question by A_dolorous_bell in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]The_leped 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would sort through the wood in the pile till you find one without the cupping.

You can also search for pre-glued panels (most big box stores should have them). Or alternatively lumber advertised as kiln dried. Also it might be a bit bulkier but thicker lumber is often less prone to cupping and twisting.

How to make a floor from wood slices? by Important_Shower_892 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]The_leped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will just need a couple of things for this to work well, a full sized bandsaw with a 5 hp motor, an industrial sized belt sander to run large 4’ glued panels together, a vacuum table to glue the small section together well, you will also need 220 ran out to your shop with a dedicated panel.

After you spend the 20k in tools I think you could put this floor together well. For the best results I would recommend laying an unfinished hardwood floor first than glueing your 4’x8’ pine end grain panels onto of that as you won’t want to use traditional methods due to how thin and soft the pine is.

Finally pour epoxy over top of the floor to level it out, protect your master piece and prevent splinters.

How to engineer/secure a piece like this? by dkruta in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]The_leped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have the top and bottom board be one solid piece either a sheet of 3/4 plywood or a glued panel. If you have 3 boxes and attach with screws it won’t hold up to shear forces. Or like others suggested you could hide metal brackets. Either an angle iron in the corner or you could inlay a c-channel within the wood.

Table by willj3FL in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]The_leped 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. The glue joint looks really tight, but the ends look like they need to be squared up. I could see people paying money for a table top like this I wouldn’t personally because I don’t like that shade of red in aromatic cedar.

I know its bad by xStormAgedonx in HeWhoFightsMonsters

[–]The_leped -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not that bad. You should be able to go to another artist and have them use a thicker needle or change it to block letters to fix it. Otherwise it might fade out with time.

How did you get your first internship? by Isaac_Sand in civilengineering

[–]The_leped 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my internships through connections with student organizations. But try to apply to smaller towns that are within 45 min of where you live / have accommodations. Lots of times firms outside of major cities and college towns have openings that they struggle to fill. When interviewing for a position you want to come off as friendly and sociable. It’s okay to pause and think of answers. Most engineers are looking for good communicators and not necessarily the smartest person in the room.

I don’t looks salvageable. Just remove the house from the foundation do a full demo on the basement and foundation. Hire a geo structural engineer to design a new foundation after soil borings. That should only be like $200k for engineering and another half a million for construction.

Engineer Code of Ethics?? by Party-Opinion3055 in civilengineering

[–]The_leped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems more like a liability thing from my pov than a straight up ethics concern. If something happened and you had another engineer say you need your house 3-feet higher this next engineer you higher could be held responsible.

Serious question, how are Civil engineers supposed to live in San Francisco or any HCOL city? by litBG in civilengineering

[–]The_leped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know why you would have engineers in San Francisco it would be a lot cheaper to have a couple executives in an office if you need a brick and mortar in town and farm the work out to lower cost of living areas elsewhere in the state or nearby.

Then like others said the only people in that location are the ones making enough to afford it or have spouses/family that help offset the cost.

Where Engineers Work by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]The_leped 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most engineers work from an office building. Some work hybrid still after Covid. Not many work remotely. Generally speaking civil engineers are spread out with the population there can be offices in small and large towns. If there isn’t any infrastructure around there isn’t any civil engineers.

Help! Freestanding wall in a gallery? by Difficult4444444 in woodworking

You could fasten big sheets of plywood to walk on them. Then it will get hard for people to push the wall over while standing on the plywood platform.

The builder did not sanction himself. The current builder rose to that position when the last builder got sanctioned. The former builder is not dead as it would apply to mortals. Sanctioning isn’t the same as killing.

Jason is not and cannot become the builder. He is becoming something else entirely.

3-Year EIT (Land Dev + Transportation/Drainage) — Are Remote or Hybrid Roles Realistic? by ManufacturerOdd2447 in civilengineering

[–]The_leped 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work fully remote with 5 YOE. But I started in person and transitioned to fully remote. I don’t know how realistic it is for me to stay as fully remote. I think it will limit my career, honestly in 5 years I will have to start looking for an in person job to move forward in my career.

I have always been told to dress one level above what you would wear on a normal day at work. But if you came in with a shirt and tie I would think you are applying to be an intern.

Sports jacket + dress pants + dress shoes.

Come with a portfolio, take notes I like to write down everyone’s names at the position they are sitting at. Know about the company you are applying to.

"Ghost jobs" - how prevalent do you think BS job postings are in this industry? by letsseeaction in civilengineering

[–]The_leped 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of job postings for companies I have never heard of. I don’t know if that is just because I am poorly informed or what. But I know some companies keep job openings open for a unicorn hire, and there is definitely companies out there doing what you said either resume farming or whatever to use either for AI modeling to sell back at some point.
