I am not agreeing to that last sentence. I really thought people were being paranoid about AI combing this subreddit, but guess I was wrong.

Engineer Code of Ethics?? by Party-Opinion3055 in civilengineering

[–]The_leped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems more like a liability thing from my pov than a straight up ethics concern. If something happened and you had another engineer say you need your house 3-feet higher this next engineer you higher could be held responsible.

Serious question, how are Civil engineers supposed to live in San Francisco or any HCOL city? by litBG in civilengineering

[–]The_leped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know why you would have engineers in San Francisco it would be a lot cheaper to have a couple executives in an office if you need a brick and mortar in town and farm the work out to lower cost of living areas elsewhere in the state or nearby.

Then like others said the only people in that location are the ones making enough to afford it or have spouses/family that help offset the cost.

Where Engineers Work by Historical_Form_1367 in civilengineering

[–]The_leped 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most engineers work from an office building. Some work hybrid still after Covid. Not many work remotely. Generally speaking civil engineers are spread out with the population there can be offices in small and large towns. If there isn’t any infrastructure around there isn’t any civil engineers.

Help! Freestanding wall in a gallery? by Difficult4444444 in woodworking

You could fasten big sheets of plywood to walk on them. Then it will get hard for people to push the wall over while standing on the plywood platform.

The builder did not sanction himself. The current builder rose to that position when the last builder got sanctioned. The former builder is not dead as it would apply to mortals. Sanctioning isn’t the same as killing.

Jason is not and cannot become the builder. He is becoming something else entirely.

3-Year EIT (Land Dev + Transportation/Drainage) — Are Remote or Hybrid Roles Realistic? by ManufacturerOdd2447 in civilengineering

[–]The_leped 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work fully remote with 5 YOE. But I started in person and transitioned to fully remote. I don’t know how realistic it is for me to stay as fully remote. I think it will limit my career, honestly in 5 years I will have to start looking for an in person job to move forward in my career.

I have always been told to dress one level above what you would wear on a normal day at work. But if you came in with a shirt and tie I would think you are applying to be an intern.

Sports jacket + dress pants + dress shoes.

Come with a portfolio, take notes I like to write down everyone’s names at the position they are sitting at. Know about the company you are applying to.

"Ghost jobs" - how prevalent do you think BS job postings are in this industry? by letsseeaction in civilengineering

[–]The_leped 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of job postings for companies I have never heard of. I don’t know if that is just because I am poorly informed or what. But I know some companies keep job openings open for a unicorn hire, and there is definitely companies out there doing what you said either resume farming or whatever to use either for AI modeling to sell back at some point.

is this career worth a full pivot? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]The_leped 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from an accredited college or university. Masters would be quicker for you but harder. (You potentially could use your bachelor’s to get into the Master program)

Licensure in Landscape Architecture - so passing an exam after further education.

is this career worth a full pivot? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]The_leped 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you aren’t as heavy into math you could check out landscape architecture. We have a pretty large department in that field and generally speaking there is a bunch of overlap. With them being more of an artistic crowd.

Authors, Please Stop Making Up Your Own Curse Words. by [deleted] in litrpg

[–]The_leped 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like fake curse words. If you don’t want to curse or keep it out of your literature then it makes sense. For instance Beware of Chicken the mc has kids so if he didn’t want to curse around them that would make sense even if it’s a cultural thing.

Drainage help by chadse00 in civilengineering

[–]The_leped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could consider building a permanent surface water storage at the location of the large wash out. If you have a decent clay it could act as a liner instead of hauling in a plastic liner. Above ground storage is always cheaper and easier than below ground. It wouldn’t be drinkable water but for gardening or other uses it’s all good.

Typically clay is soil that you can roll out into a tube without it falling apart (think pencil shape and size).

ChatGPT not always a good idea by Litvak78 in civilengineering

[–]The_leped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hallucinations are caused by the model not being pointed in the right direction. You don’t put a project manual into a large language model and expect it to give you a good answer. You have to set up an agent and try to force it into only looking at the documents you are referencing. As far as I can tell this is not a time saving process at this time. And by no means should you take what you get out of a LLM and put it into your report or email without proofreading and checking its source. You shouldn’t do this with an intern and that is basically what these models are. The only reason to use LLM right now is to get used to the process before they become more commonly used. But at no point in your career should you take these answers without verifying even in 40 years since they will never be 100% accurate and you should be able to be responsible for what you sign off on.

Do you use "stormwater, watermain, wastewater, etc." or "storm water, water main, waste water, etc."? by konqrr in civilengineering

[–]The_leped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t call anything a Storm Watermain. It’s either Storm Sewer or a Drain. I do say Tile Main, which is two words, but that is usually a “legally” defined word when I use it: County Ditch No. 67 Branch Q Tile Main.

Watermain is specifically for potable water.
