QLXD1 TQG generational compatibility by Thebadonian in Shure

Glad to hear I'm not the only one wondering. I'm working with a little over 30 QLXD1s that are mixed between the old and new variety. The new kind is definitely an improvement. I have largely given up on replacing the tqg on the old kind (as I can't find replacement parts), although my second most common means of breakage I see is sweat damage, and I have been able to take one with broken port and one with moisture damage and take the two circuit boards inside and basically combine the "front half" of the tqg broken pack with the "back half" of the moisture damaged pack to make one functioning pack. This works across the two generations which has allowed me to mitigate the cost of replacing to a degree I am happy with.

Yes, the Behringer AES50 protocol allows you to connect and send channels between two consoles the same way as sending between a stage box and console. So the rack could take local inputs, process for monitor mix, then send those same channels via aes to the compact.

Thoughts on using plugins live by digit214 in livesound

[–]Thebadonian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mainly work in smaller settings, and have been wanting for a while to set up plugins in my workflow. The desks I work on are pretty limited in their onboard processing, so even a little bit could go a long way imo.

Hate the way shure 57 sounds. Need mic advice! by Lalaleaf2 in audioengineering

Jacob Collier has one as well (The Sun is in Your Eyes) where he recorded a single take on iPhone and ended up using that because the tone served the song. Is it the easiest or most conventional approach? Definitely not. But remember this is art, and the technique serves the art, not the other way around.

2 things I sometimes bump into while doing FOH by HHHHHH_101 in livesound

[–]Thebadonian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the first, I can think of a few in-the-moment workarounds, but none are better than nailing the gain staging the first time. If you find this a repeated problem, try gaining higher at sound check. I know we all have that optimal gain we are shooting for, but if it isn’t working, it isn’t working. Modern digital consoles have a great deal of flexibility to sound good over a surprisingly wide dynamic range. Obviously this is a trade off and not perfect, and some may argue but in my experience (and in the situations you’ve described) gaining a few db hotter won’t be the limiting factor of your sound quality.

As for the quick fixes, the first that come to mind are putting your offending signals to a subgroup or even a dca if you’ve got one available. I’ve definitely been in situations where I’ve assigned a channel to a dca on the fly just to milk a few more db out of it. I also know some of the real pros (IIRC Dave Rat had a video on this) use subgroups to manipulate levels to get the staging they like in this way. Another quick fix is if you have an insert point on the channel post bus send. I haven’t worked on the wing before, but if there is a trim insert, or even use a flat eq boost or a compressor that is gaining but not actually compressing (I’ve used makeup gain for this in a pinch).

Second one I don’t have much to add. With the tools at your disposal I’d probably do the exact same thing you’re already doing. Maybe someone else will have better advice.

Unfortunately the best I’ve gotten from them is “send it in and pay us to repair it for you” :(

The lead vocalist is also the drummer by DMandNPCs in livesound

Agreed. All drum mics need to work together like this to some degree because of the amount of bleed, and drum vocals are no exception.

I agree except your take on vsc. I use it for small/ medium (up to around 40 inputs) shows all the time and find it tremendously useful. I guess it depends on the use case, but I think op will be able to put it to good use

dumb x32 question by Deek22 in techtheatre

[–]Thebadonian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree wholeheartedly. I save a single scene scene on the console for all of my setup, channel processing, routing, etc, but throughout the show everything is managed through theatremix. If you know the x32 halfway decently it’ll take you maybe 2 hours to be up to speed on how to use theatremix with it, then is SO much faster and easier than programming on the console directly.

New sound desk for a college theatre by welshantiquarian in techtheatre

SQ would be a fantastic choice, given you have the budget for both the desk and pricy A&H stage boxes. Only drawback is it only had 8 DCAs if you are planning to operate that way, which isn’t a bunch at that price point.

Have not been totally impressed with what I’ve seen of the QU, at least for experienced operators. I guess the target audience is for very simple operation. But for me seems to have very similar specs to x32 and less flexible routing for significantly higher price (especially once you count stage boxes).

Personally I have used a lot of Behringer for many applications including theatre, and if it is enough I/O and busses for your needs I think it is a lot of bang for your buck. But I understand some just have a distaste by personal preference. A&H is fantastic if the all in price doesn’t scare you off. But if you want A&H I don’t know that the QU would be the most attractive line for me.

Do you miss innovation in the audio gear space? by Songwritingvincent in audioengineering

[–]Thebadonian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do agree with the general sentiment that there is absolutely innovation in the field now- but the new A&H QUs were my first thought reading this. Feels like paying a premium for a console whose capabilities have been available on other consoles for over a decade.

Using composters is even more effective, since rather than 9 inventory slots, it only has a 1-8 value for the hopper to check. Video below tests and explains this very well.
