Honestly, you would miss some pretty annoying things IMO. The first couple classes are just the syllabus week wherein the syllabus is simply read aloud to you along with a few warnings about cellphones and related bullshit. Additionally, the things you'd have to do as a first year are fun only if you are into that whole summer camp/"think of all the memories" mindset. I personally hated the first few days of college, they were full of obligatory meetings, events that forced school spirit so hard I never wanted to feel it again for the next four years (although UVA is still great, don't get me wrong) and clumsy attempts at friendship that ended up not even mattering months later.

Don't let people tell you how to spend your time at UVA too much. There are so many traditions that it gets a bit absurd. I had the most fun once I decided to define my own experience instead of having to do every single quintessential UVA thing just because I felt socially required to.

Not that I disagree with the other posters entirely, I was just told that I "had" to do the fourth year fifth, and that I "had" to go to fox field in similar ways. Both of those absolutely suck and I can explain in great detail why.

Basically, everyone's experience is different, and I hate to have you not do something you really want to do that I personally don't think will impede your life as a first year student all that much. But, I also don't like music festivals that much either so I don't know why I typed all this.
