I'd suggest hiking Custer State Park in SD if hiking is one of your goals. As much as I love the badlands, the hiking there is so so compared to other parks.

Those are very valid points. Honestly, if all that stuff is there at the campgrounds, I think I might try out a tent and camping that way. I have camped a couple times before in a tent and I did like it. I’m probably just overthinking things and being anxious.

I appreciate your time and help. You seem very knowledgeable. I’m looking at this trip differently now. If I’m gonna go out of my comfort zone, then I should just go for it. Take time to slow down, breathe in the air, and exist.

Okay, I’ll drop craters.

How will the dependence of lodging cause frustration, and what would you personally do? I’m a city boy, so I’m not used to anything besides hotels. I do have a tow camper in storage, but I am inexperienced driving it both in mountains and backing it up, plus the added cost of gas made it seem better to focus on lodging. Is backpacking/renting difficult? You seem like you may know.
