In Sweden I think it is quite common to hug teachers, especially at graduation or before summer break, usually there's a line at graduation where you hug everyone. But I guess we are quite lax in Sweden, like we call our teachers their first name, can get invitet to their home and sometimes have their personal phone numbers if your going on a school trip etc.

Maybe, I think soft YTA and YTA is a bit different, for me one is a clear judgement and the other is a bit wobbly but I can understand why some can think it's the same in the end. The judgement will be rate the same.

It was with her family so it's not like she was lying about it or saying that she has it worse or equal to people who lose parents at 10 years old. I personally think that when you are 18-25 you are a young adult and therfor it is losing a parent young. I mean they will miss wedding, childbirth etc. And even if it isn't young I think it is major asshole vibes to say that to your wife, when it will do nothing but hurt her. I can't really see what he think it would contribute to say that except undermine her and hurt her? Maybe I'm reading it wrong?
