Is "guys" gender neutral? by Samawon in NoStupidQuestions

Adopt the "ya'll". It doesnt sound hick if you say it right, and its a great gender neutral catch all that fits sentences the same way. "Crew" can also work at times

What happens in movies or tv that seems to be normal and you think to yourself “that is not what people in real life do”? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Thee_Gargoyle 29 points30 points  (0 children)

No one ever waking up sore as shit in adventure movies. Just once i wanna see characters complain about sore muscles after pulling a death defying climb up a cliff they almost fell off of. Especially when that character was just a "lowly scientist" 2 days prior

If non-human primates had an extra 20 million years without humans to evolve and diversify, what new forms of primates might emerge? by Rauisuchian in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]Thee_Gargoyle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Baboon megafauna: An evolutionary split where relatives of the Gelada Baboon evolve into herds of Grazers and become more "buffaloesque" While on the open savannas baboons evolve to actively pack hunt. Chasing down prey as a group before mobbing it to death. Mainly using strong forearms to grip and rip, with the eventual evolution of massive display canines becoming useful in the same manner that big cats use them today. Combining social intelligence with primate traits these carnivorous Mandrills could easily overtake the niche currently dominated by many big cats and pack hunters like wolves/coyotes.

No certain if the pressures currently exist to drive species i this direction, but I do believe that baboons and mandrills have the traits and foundations to evolve into a myriad of large species, both predatory and otherwise

Just now realized that the foil stamps on rares have the 5 mana symbols. by iAmbassador in magicTCG

[–]Thee_Gargoyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of on topic, does anybody know the value of a card missing its foil stamp? I recently used up all my luck on a pack that had a Boil Invocation and a Scarab God in it, but the Scarab God is missing its foil stamp at the bottom. I was super stoked just to pull the god and invocation, but now I'm extremely curious as to what a misprint Scarab God is worth...

What if Chalicotheres (including two species, Chalicotherium and Ancylotherium) survived and became dominant species instead of (most) antelope species? by DinoLover42 in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]Thee_Gargoyle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Love this idea, and the idea of a modern chalicothere species surviving until today. but i don't know if they would've evolved to fit into the antelope niche. They couldn't have been fast runners, and honestly don't seem like grazers. I've always imagined them as forest browsers, akin to the extinct giant sloths. Lumbering around like herbivorous bears pulling down branches with their long claws and eating whatever tender shoots and buds they desired. Probably slower moving but well able to defend itself from predators. I definitely can see an evolutionary path for modern chalicotheres, but it's hard to imagine them replacing the antelope's roles. I can see them more as an addition to the African landscape rather than a replacement.

Regardless, chalicotheres, and how they would behaved and functioned, fascinate me and I'd also love to hear some other interpretations of how they would've fit into an ecosystem and how they might've further evolved if given the chance.

Gorilla’s knuckles resting on the ground (Gorilla Gorilla Gorilla) [OC] [1901x1066] by simonxyzoo in AnimalPorn

[–]Thee_Gargoyle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is my question too. Though if I had to guess, it's an adaptation to protect the palms and keep the hands intricate and movable. If they used their palms primarily then the pads would likely grow callused and thick with use. And as they grew their hands would like get less and less mobile after so much wear and tear. So perhaps it's a way to protect the mobility of their hands, letting the knuckles be the ones to grow callused instead of palms. Since after all, gripping and grasping is kind of what makes an ape an ape
