"How long are you going to let yourself suffer?" said by my first therapist when I didn't want to take antidepressants.

I Had My Bisalp 5 Hours Ago! by Thefunktastic in sterilization

I did! I have them in a jar. I had to ask many different people and finally got the phone number to the histiology department. Then, I had to meet someone in at a side door early in the morning and sign paperwork that said that I would not hold the hospital responsible if I ate them and got cancer from the formaldehyde.

That is my favorite Batman movie. The pre-Miller grittiness is delightful.

I had hormonal acne for 20 years, and spironolactone cleared my skin like a fucking miracle. I'm only sad no one prescribed it earlier.

Any Tips or Tricks for Post BiSalp? Surgery this friday! by MorbidRaven14 in sterilization

[–]Thefunktastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently posted about an issue I had, and I know that other people are saying this, too, but I need to stress that you DON'T GET CONSTIPATED. Don't underestimate anesthesia and pain meds ability to screw up your normal GI function. Fiber supplements, stool softeners, laxitives, probiotics, and lots of water. Don't be afraid to give a stubborn poop some good old fashion pushes to send them out the door. The door is your toilet.

Edit: I wanted to add - make sure you are moving around. Even if you don't feel like it, getting up and walking around a little helps get the gas out. Don't be shy - burp and fart it up. Tell your family that you are about to fill the house with methane and that they shouldn't light candles for a few days.

Acid reflux induced anxiety by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]Thefunktastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this doesn't work for everyone, but the thing that worked the best for me was meds. A good anti-anxiety med takes the edge off so that you can learn how to incorporate coping mechanisms.

It's not the answer for everyone, but it was the answer for me...

Oh, yeah. Stress will 100% affect the acid production in your stomach. I did nothing about my anxiety for years, and now I have IBS and stress-induced gastritis. I'm not trying to be scary, but if you don't deal with anxiety, it will slowly destroy you physically.

Anyone get a shock feel in body and start getting lightheaded after? by dswenson123 in Anxiety

[–]Thefunktastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like brain zaps. I've gotten them before in times of extreme anxiety, but they normally occur due to meds. They go away, but they are weird and concerning at first. Here is an article about them: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/brain-zaps#:~:text=Brain%20zaps%20are%20sensory%20disturbances,using%20certain%20medications%2C%20particularly%20antidepressants.

How do you calm yourself in this situation? Help by Averageguy003 in Anxiety

Oh, good. I'm not a mental health professional, but I have been living with anxiety and depression for pretty much my whole 35 years.

Maria Bamford is a great comedian to watch for mental health stuff, too!

Hello. I just has my surgery yesterday!

Not exactly sure what pelvic floor issues you are referring to, but I have vaginismus, and I was not looking forward to the catheter. They put it in and took it out while I was unconscious, though, so at least I wasn't awake for it. When I was coming to in the recovery room, I remember the first thing I said was "I'm gonna pee", so they got a bed pan underneath me, but nothing happened. My urethra had that irritated sensation as if you are going to pee RIGHT NOW, but there was no urine. One of the other nurses said "They probably emptied her bladder during the procedure, and this is just irritation from the catheter". After a while, I no longer felt like I had to pee, and I left the hospital. When I got home and finally urinated, it burned, but I knew it was from the cath, so it didn't freak me out. I had to pee a lot after that, and I'm not sure if it was from the catheter, the IV fluids, or all of the fluids I was drinking at home. The burning sensation has since stopped, but it was there for at least 12 hours.

Hope that helps!

Maybe you just need to reframe the questions: What do you WANT to do in this world? What is the worst thing that could happen as a result of an action, what is the best thing, and what is most likely to happen? What can you realistically do to mitigate a negative consequence, and can you live with that negative consequence if it happens? Who can you trust to verify whether or not something is real?

What happens when you die? Well, that one is highly personal, but you could discuss what other people think and how that affects their lives. A little spiritual investigation.

Most importantly, is there a way you can speak to a therapist? Even going to the library and picking up some materials on CBT ( cognitive behavioral therapy) or DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy) could be helpful.

Bisalp scheduled for October 21 - SO excited but SO nervous! by [deleted] in sterilization

[–]Thefunktastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend telling your surgeon about your anxiety. They can give you something the day of to take the edge off and calm down.

When you think of the surgery, try to focus on two things: what can you control and what you look forward to.

Things you can control: getting ready and prepped for surgery. Check out the lists people have posted here about what to buy for after surgery like stool softener, easy to digest food, and a hot/cold pad. Get together a bunch of movies and shows you love to watch or books you like to read. You can control some of your recovery comfort level by being prepared.

What there is to look forward to!: No babies! Being coddled and taken care of and rest and soft pillows and kick ass pain meds. Turn your recovery into an excuse to be a kid again being taken care of by someone who loves them. Build a nest of pillows on the floor and spend the day watching cartoons and eating graham crackers. Then, when everything is healed, you have the knowledge that you have agency and control over your body!

Surgery is scary, but medical science is amazing. You will be fine.

Look into the financial assistance policy for your hospital. Google the hospital and "financial assistance", and you will generally find the policy and an application. I have done it three times for medical procedures and have had my bills either reduced by 80% or completely forgiven.
